This guide tells you where to find the Shatter Star Shield in God of War Ragnarok to send your foes flying into the air.
Shields are one of the many weapons you can equip in God of War Ragnarok. It allows you to block attacks and parry to deflect blows. It will be in your inventory from the beginning, along with the Leviathan axe.
Kratos’ shields are not that abundant. There are only a total of 5, and each has different skills.
Where to Get the Shatter Star Shield in God of War Ragnarok
To get the Shatter Star Shield in God of War Ragnarok, you’ll need to find the third legendary chest in Vanaheim. It can be found in the Abandoned Village you pass through during the main story.
It is located in an area with poison-spitting plants, so be careful. After climbing the wall behind the first plant, look to the right. You must freeze the plant on the right to reach it, or else you’ll die.
Location: Legendary chest #3 in Vanaheim.
Skill: Shield Bash
How to Use the Shatter Star Shield in God of War Ragnarok?
While this one is a bit more complex in mechanics, it’s easier than it first sounds. Instead of having a shield bash, you fire a concussive wave by double-tapping L1.
The strength of this wave is determined by the level of charge on the shield. There are three different levels.
- The first-level wave does the same as a shield bash, which helps break guards but not much else.
- The second level will stagger enemies and push them back, which is an excellent tool for countering enemies mid-attack.
- The final level blows enemies back, dealing damage and stun damage.
The way you charge up the shield is by simply holding the block. You start a charge level one, and after holding the shield for a bit, it will gain a bright glow which means you are a charge level two, and then a darker glow which signifies charge level three.
So far, so good.

Well, there is more to the shield’s charging mechanic than meets the eye.
- If you drop your guard after building up the charges, they will remain on the shield
This means you can charge up a level three blast, then run into combat and immediately knock some enemies off their feet at the start of a fight. If you break the attack, you lose one charge level, so it’s better to sidestep or dodge with the shield up,
- There is a lovely trick you can use to build up your charge level even faster.
Perform a shield bash with this shield right before an enemy hits you with an attack to immediately gain an extra charge level. This means that if you counter an attack this way with no charge, it will fire off a level-two wave.
This is arguably the most powerful counterattack you can perform. So while it might take some getting used to, don’t let the mechanics intimidate you, as the Shatter Star Shield is badass.
God of War Ragnarok is available on PS4 and PS5.
