Poppy Playtime became a viral horror game after its release in 2021, but as a first-person game, and as such, it never revealed the face of the protagonist to the players. The character’s identity or backstory is also unknown, so the fan community just calls him “Player.” During the three chapters, Player remained as another of the game’s great mysteries. However, with each release, more and more information about him has come to light. But Chapter 3 reveals vital details about Player.
Poppy Playtime: Who is “Player”?
At the beginning of each chapter is the chapter’s name, a picture of the boss, and a brief description. Before playing the game, Chapter 1 narrates that the Player is an ex-employee of Playtime Co. who has returned to the factory after many years. At the beginning of the game, an old Poppy commercial appears, and then a VHS image with a letter from Playtime addressed to the main character. The letter states that everyone thought that 10 years ago, the people disappeared, but in reality, they are still in the factory. So, Player decides to investigate the letter and the company.
As soon as you arrive at Playtime Co., you see the ravages of time and, strangely, stains that appear to be blood. As Player goes deeper, he confirms that the place is not really abandoned and that the monsters want him dead. The reason becomes clear in Chapter 3, where Poppy shows the protagonist a VHS called “The Hour of Joy,” where all the toys brutally eliminate the people inside Playtime. But the detail is that Player wasn’t there on the day that the tragic incident happened. The guilt and loss of his companions drove him to investigate.
Even in Chapter 3, at school, Player meets Miss Delight, who remembers him well as a worker. She is shocked to see him alive. But a detail that has unleashed more theories is that the teacher refers to the protagonist as if he were not human. Before this point, Poppy Playtime fans thought Player was a simple worker, but now many believe he was the result of a Bigger Bodies experiment. Another very important point is that the game never mentions in which department the player works.
