Passions is a now iconic but relatively short-lived Soap Opera that ran from 1999 until 2008. After initially airing on NBC, the show moved to Direct TV’s 101 Network later in its run. Before that, unfortunately, Passions on NBC was one of the most exciting soap operas of the modern era of daytime television. Fans loved the show for its wacky storylines that went far beyond most soaps and for its use of the supernatural.
Of course, Passions also had the typical makings of a daytime soap opera. Like many of the best of them, the show revolves around multiple families in the small town of Harmony. Also, just like every other daytime soap opera, there was never very much emphasis on the passage of time, although Passions perhaps took more liberties with this than most other shows of its kind. Nevertheless, Passions was a unique show with a reasonably unique audience. We need the Passions reboot because the show ended relatively early and left much up in the air.
The Long Awaited’ Passions’ Reboot
Like most shows that go off the air, there has been talk about bringing it back for years. Of course, in the beginning, most fans wanted this to mean the same cast would return. In addition, we wanted the Passions reboot to pick up where the show left off. Now, it’s been well over a decade. In addition to most of the cast having moved on, there have been a couple of notable deaths. Most recently, Ben Masters, who played Julian Crane on Passions, died.
Should it ever get made, the Passions reboot would need a primarily new cast. Sure, we want some of our favorites from the original show, but with such a large cast, we’d only expect to see a few familiar faces. As long as whoever produces the Passions reboot keeps the same crazy tone, we’re sure almost any cast could make the events of Harmony must watch tv. Passions wasn’t always as successful a show as its rivals of the time. However, with how times have changed and the availability of streaming, this could be a huge hit today.
We Need A New Supernatural Soap Opera
One of the reasons we need the Passions reboot is that there should be a new supernatural soap opera. Sure, the landscape of soap operas isn’t as vast as it once was due to reality tv. However, the magical element of Passions is one of the reasons the show stood out when it was on NBC. Fans loved the havoc Tabitha, the town witch, and her companion Timmy caused. We’d see her cast spells, and Tabitha often controlled the show’s events, which also made Passions fun.
There are countless shows on television with supernatural elements to them. However, what could make a Passions reboot different is that the show isn’t about that but instead includes it. The other thing about making a new soap opera that includes the supernatural is that it adds to the storyline. Sometimes storylines on soap operas go on for too long. Having a character who is a witch, like in the original Passions, could speed things along. Tabitha in the Passions reboot could be like Wanda. Of course, Juliet Mills, who played Tabitha in the original Passions, would be our first choice for this role. She brought such a huge personality to the role that it’s hard to see anyone else in it. However, we’d trust whoever makes the Passions reboot to cast it.
‘Passions’ Is Perfect For Streaming
As mentioned before, Passions wasn’t always a huge hit. In its later years, the show’s ratings took a tumble, which is a big reason why they canceled it. However, the Passions reboot is needed after all these years because it would be perfect for streaming. Being on TV for a daytime audience meant Passions had to rely on a traditional soap opera-watching audience. While people loved the show, many of its storylines were too much for this group of watchers. With streaming, it’s much more likely the show could catch on with a reasonably wide array of potential fans.
There are many reboots on streaming today. There’s Bel-Air on Peacock, ICarly, and many others. Not all reboots find success, but Passions is one of those shows from the late 1990s that could be one of the successful reboots. Even outside the show’s supernatural elements, Passions had a way of sucking viewers in with its off-the-wall storytelling. We’d want the reboot on streaming to be just as unconventional. We’d also imagine that a new version of Passions would not be a daily soap opera but a nighttime drama instead.
The ‘Passions’ Reboot Could Be A Brand New Show
The great thing about it being well over ten years since the last episode is that the writers could start from scratch. Of course, many of us want the show to feel familiar, but there is also much room for significant change. Again, we want Tabitha the witch back, but the Passions reboot could go in a totally different direction. Perhaps it’s almost all different characters, but the show still takes place in Harmony. The team behind the show could also focus on the younger people from the show. This would work because Passions always had younger viewers than options like The Young And The Restless and Days of our Lives. Long-time fans may be upset at first if they radically change Passions, but if done right, Passions could be a hit again.
However, with all the changes a potential Passions reboot could have, we have one thing that needs to remain. The Passions theme song is iconic, and we hope they keep the same song. Sure, maybe they could remix it, but it’s such a great song for a series.
We don’t know if a Passions reboot will ever actually happen. However, we do think there is a place for one on streaming. A Passions reboot is needed because the network treated the show unjustly with its end. In addition, we hope the old episodes soon come to streaming.
