A young woman was out in public when she was confronted by a religious woman in North Carolina. The woman questioned her on why she wasn’t religious and tried to sway her opinion. But she wasn’t about to let anybody tell her what views to believe in and decided to stand up for herself.
Trin (@trippietrinn) shared a TikTok video of the interaction she had with a religious woman in the Bible Belt. She was minding her business out in public when a woman confronted her about her fake eyelashes. According to Trin, the woman told her that her lashes meant she isn’t a “Child of God.” The woman continues to berate her and preach at her, but Trin trembles as she tells the woman, “I just don’t believe in God.”
While the woman rants to her about her lack of religion, Trin looks worriedly at her camera to show the audience she can’t believe what’s happening. She tries to tell the woman that her “mom and dad” created her, not God. She says, “This is my body and I can do whatever I want. I can pierce myself, I can get tattoos, I can wear lashes and makeup.” The woman tries to defend her religious statement by saying, “You’re beautiful the way that God created you.”
Trin interrupts the woman, who won’t stop trying to throw her religious comments at her. She said it “gives her peace” to not have to worry about religion. She tells the woman that her own parents don’t “force religion” on her and she isn’t going to stand there and listen to this. As Trin adds in the caption of her video, “I know how it feels to be treated differently because of your beliefs and would never do it to someone else.” She states that she “really tried to keep my cool” despite the disrespect she received from this random stranger.
Trin’s video immediately sparked reactions from viewers, with many showing their support to her. One shared their own personal story, “As a Buddhist whose only option was a Christian private school for a year… I feel you… I was treated horribly and you are your own person. You know what you want, you know what you need. Most importantly, please take pride in yourself. You have the power in your life.” Another sympathized, “Girl I live in Alabama. I understand.” One commenter added, “I live in the Bible Belt too not only am I non-religious but I’m also alternative and an LGBT ally.”
Commenters continue to share their stories and opinions on Trin’s video. The video sparked a variety of conversations about living in the south as a non-religious person, as well as treating people around you well.
