On Thursday, April 8, the WWE Games Twitter account encouraged fans to watch both nights of WrestleMania for a special announcement. This special announcement turned out to be a teaser trailer for the next WWE game, WWE 2K22. The trailer was very short and did not reveal too much. It featured in-game footage of Rey Mysterio making his entrance and performing his finisher on Cesaro. No release date was given for WWE 2K22, but more details are coming soon, according to the WWE Games Twitter account.

Judging by the game’s title, it’s safe to assume that the game will release this year. When it does, it will be the first simulation WWE game 2K has released since the disastrous WWE 2K20. The reason for such a long hiatus is due to the negative reaction to that game. The game suffered from a ridiculous amount of glitches and bugs. This led to many negative articles and YouTube videos on the game.
As a result of the negative reception and poor sales, the game’s follow-up, WWE 2K21, had been canceled in favor of WWE Battlegrounds, an arcade brawler. Although this game was a different genre than WWE 2k games, it also received negative reviews, just like 2K20. The game was criticized for essentially being a mobile game released for consoles due to the number of microtransactions it had.
It’s clear that fans and critics don’t think too highly of WWE games currently. If 2K wants to overcome this, they are going to have to re-evaluate their plans. They seem to be doing this already by hiring a new producer for the games this past year. Over the summer, the new producer, Patrick Gilmore, gave fans hope about the WWE games’ future during a Reddit AMA. The WWE 2K22 trailer shows that the game’s release is still far away, but hopefully, it will learn from the previous game’s many mistakes.
