While there’s blocking in fighting games like MK1 and Tekken 8, wrestlers tend to reverse the opponent’s move in the WWE 2K games. The winner of a pro wrestling match is the one with the best reversals, and blocking, defending, and reverse mastery isn’t as easy as performing a DDT in WWE 2K24. The game offers a variety of reversal options to defend yourself against your opponent’s moves, and you’ll need to learn all of them if you want to finish your story.

WWE 2K24 Reverse System, Explained

WWE 2K24‘s reverse system is pretty much like the two previous games. There are three types of reverse mechanics to counter your opponent’s moves:

  • Timed Reversals
  • Guess Game Reverse
  • Block and Dodge

Timed Reverse

This type of reversal has been in the WWE video games since the day I remember. The system is simple: a Y/Triangle button prompt will appear, and if you press it in time, your wrestler reverses the opponent’s move. This reversing technique is completely time-based, and it can nearly undo all the punch and grapple moves if you’re vigilant.

The one important addition to this year’s WWE 2K24 on the time reversal system is the action report when you miss the timing. Now, if you’re early or late for pressing the reverse button, the game will show you a quick message, helping you to memorize the exact time that you need to reverse that move next time.

This type of reversal has been presented in the recent WWE 2K games, introducing a guess mini-game to counter the opponent’s move. You can defend yourself by guessing the opponent’s move and pressing the exact button they’ve used to perform an attack in WWE 2K24. These buttons are:

  • A/X
  • X/Square
  • B/Circle

So, if your opponent is trying to start a grapple, attack using X/Square, or perform an Irish Whip by B/Circle, press the exact button in a second, and you’ll counter it. You can always look at this type of reversal as your second option, trying to reverse the opponent’s move with a simple guess. If you missed the guess, you still have time to reverse their moves by the Y/Triangle time reversal in WWE 2K24.

Block and Dodge

If you press and hold the Y/Triangle button in a standing position, your wrestler puts his guard up. If you hold down block in WWE 2K24, your opponent won’t be able to land a direct punch or kick. However, they can still perform a grappling move, only if you stand still.

While in the blocking stance, you can use the left-stick directional buttons and the R1/RB input to dodge the opponent’s punch, kick, or even grapples. This defense option requires fast reflexes and sometimes works even better than timed and guess reversals in WWE 2K24.

While blocking is good for standing against punches and running attacks in WWE 2K24, you can’t block the objects that are flying to hit you. Throwing a garbage can or slippers is a new gameplay mechanic in WWE 2K24, adding more fun to the experience; until your opponent spams the move and it gets annoying. So, how do you block it?

There are two options:

  1. Dodge the object by holding down the Y/Triangle button and moving the left stick in the opposite direction.
  2. Reverse the throw by standing in front of your opponent, and pressing the Y/Triangle button when the prompt appears.

In general, defending and reversing the opponent’s moves in WWE 2K24 relies on good memory and fast reflexes. If you read the opponent’s mind and guess their attack, or have lightning fast reflexes to press the button before the attack lands, you’re the king of the ring.

WWE 2K24 is currently available to play on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.
