One of the hardest choices you’ll make while playing Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is trying to decide which villager is best suited to get upgrades. What makes this even more challenging is the fact that you can’t undo the upgrades, and even worse, there isn’t a lot of currency to get them all in your first playthrough. With that in mind, we’ve made a list to show you the best villager role upgrades you can get in Kunitsu-Gami.
5. Woodcutter (Fully Upgraded)
The first villager role you unlock in Kunitsu-Gami will likely be the first one you’ll upgrade as well, and frankly, that’s one of the best decisions you can make. While cheap to make and a bit fragile at first, Woodcutters are the fastest melee defenders that can overwhelm enemies once you fully upgrade them. Furthermore, it is one of the few roles that can chase down enemies and even charge at them while attacking. If you want a unit to carry you until the final stage, you can’t go wrong with this one.
4. Sumo Wrestler (Fully Upgraded)
The tankiest unit in the game deserves an upgrade as soon as you unlock it, which won’t take long, thankfully. This role does everything perfectly, from damaging enemies to depleting the Resist Gauge and even knocking back a few foes. It is one of the most expensive units to create, but once you have one or two, you can place them at strategic points of a stage and let them hold the line. This role needs to be fully upgraded, mainly due to the HP buff, which will allow them to stay at the front for longer.
3. Ascetic (Binding Spell Upgrade)
It might seem a bit rare that we only recommend upgrading this villager role halfway, but there’s a reason for it. While the Ascetic gets a fantastic final ability, the currency to improve your villagers is scarce, hence why we’ll only use it to unlock the Binding Spell upgrade for Ascetics. Once you get it, their skill will slow down enemies considerably, and the previous passive abilities will give them enough HP to stay in the fight. You can continue purchasing skills for them, but we recommend using that currency for other defenders and then returning to complete this one.
2. Shaman (Fully Upgraded)
There are only two ways to heal villagers in the game: rations and through a Shaman’s healing spells. The former are scarce, and since Soh will also use them, you’re better off upgrading your Shaman. Here, I recommend doing a full upgrade, but you can purchase everything except for the final skill, as it is quite expensive. Having almost all skills will beef up your Shaman’s health, increase the healing output and range, and just make them a fully packed unit. Regardless of how strong they are, always place Woodcutters or Sumo Wrestlers near them to keep them safe.
1. Sorcerer (Fully Upgraded)
One of the best villager roles in Kunitsu-Gami, and one that deserves upgrades more than others, is the Sorcerer. This unit won’t damage enemies by flinging spells or even try running to protect Yoshiro. Instead, it’ll charge a destructive spell and summon Shikigami to stun enemies. The reason why you should improve this role fast is because certain skills reduce the casting time of the Sorcerer’s Incantation. A team with four fully upgraded Sorcerers will allow you to cast the divine spell faster, thus eliminating hordes of enemies instantly. The only downside is that it takes a while until you can unlock this role. However, those in New Game Plus can use it right from the start.
And there you have it. While you should also focus on upgrading other villager roles in Kunitsu-Gami, these are the best to get started. Since it’ll take a while to unlock Sorcerers, you can spend some of the currency on Soh or some of your other rules, like Marksmen or Archers. Yet, remember that every upgrade is definitive, and you won’t be able to reverse any of them, so be careful when choosing who to improve.
