Governor Abigail Spanberger has recently been criticized after posting pictures from a visit to the annual conference of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association (VSA). The backlash was largely driven by recent controversies surrounding the Virginia governor, particularly the perception that she is “protecting” illegal immigrants in the state through sanctuary policies and a lack of cooperation with ICE.
The governor recently posted two pictures from her visit to the VSA Spring Conference and Exhibition, which was held in Virginia Beach. At the event, Spanberger spoke to officers and posed for photos.
According to Spanberger, she was “honored to join the Virginia Sheriff’s Association.” In the post, she thanked the officers for “everything you do to keep our Commonwealth safe.”
Locals Reacts to Spanberger’s Visit to Sheriff’s Association
Posting these pictures on X was arguably not a great idea, as the post was met with significant backlash against Spanberger and her administration. The main issue was that many commenters believed Spanberger had an anti-law enforcement agenda. “You literally have done everything in your power to make it more difficult for law enforcement to do their job,” one user argued.
Someone else said: “Then why don’t you have their backs? Your policies are terrible for police, citizens, and safety. The only group who benefit are illegals.” Others added: “You and your policies are antithetical to common sense law enforcement. I can’t believe they let you through the door.”
The backlash was directly related to recent policies, including rules limiting cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in some jurisdictions, which commenters viewed negatively. “Of course you still let violent criminal illegal migrants run rampant in your state, so I’m sure they appreciate you for that!”
Others criticized the assault weapons ban enacted by Spanberger earlier this year: “Was it fun knowing that none of them enforce the unconstitutional gun laws you signed? We are all laughing at you.”
Many commenters also claimed that the people at the Sheriff’s Association themselves disliked her. “90% of the people in that room despise you,” one user wrote.
It remains to be seen how Spanberger will try to address the perception among some commenters that her administration is anti-law enforcement in the future.
