The first couple of months in gaming are quiet in 2020. No doubt many developers are planning for their Holiday 2020 releases or simply their next-gen titles. However, there is still a large stack of games releasing for this gen of consoles. That’s why I’m here to give you a heads up and plan for March, yes March. In less than two months we will hit the ground running with big releases and it will likely snowball from there. Just when I think the March videogame releases list can’t have any more big names, it suddenly does. Here are some of the titles to watch out for, better start putting money in those piggy banks folks!
Final Fantasy 7 Remake (PS4) – March 3rd
March is a month full of highly and long-anticipated games. The first big videogame release is no exception to the rule. Final Fantasy 7 Remake was basically made because fans pressured Square Enix into making it. I highly doubt the company ever had direct plans to make it, but the constant persistence of fans surprisingly paid off. The graphics and trailers alone, combined with a combat system that seems to blend the old with the new, such as Final Fantasy 15. The craziest part? On the release date, it’s only Part 1. I can’t remember the last time a large game released in two parts. Will this be a big game? You bet your crazy number of Final Fantasy years it will be.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX (Switch) – March 6th
This is a newly announced title from Nintendo’s Pokemon direct on January 9th. For the full roundup of that direct check it out here. I don’t think anyone expected to have a Pokemon game releasing in March. It may not be a big name, but it’s another remake of two previous Pokemon games. Originally released on Game Boy Advance as Red Rescue Team and then on the DS as Blue Rescue Team. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Team DX has the main character turned into a Pikachu, meaning you’ll be able to talk to other Pokemon! This one is a fun adventure ride that is a big departure from your classic Pokemon games. In addition, it has a demo version on the Nintendo eShop and the save data carries over in case you decide to purchase the full title.
Nioh 2 (PS4) – March 13th
In the same vein as the Soulsbourn series, Nioh 2 looks to be as challenging as its predecessor. As a successor to Nioh, released in 2017, the next title in the series will actually be a prequel. It will predate the timeline of Nioh and be set in the late 1500s. Thus instead of playing as William Adams, this time around players will be able to create their own character. Arguably the biggest changeup from the former title, your character is a yokai. This means players will be able to transform into their own yoki form and use special powers.
Another fun feature is the co-op, which will support summoning two players, previously you could only play with one other person. Don’t worry though you’ll still be able to summon AI players if you prefer to not play with the real deal. Overall with new features and a huge looking skill tree, Nioh 2 looks to be bigger and better than its predecessor and that’s saying something.
Animal Crossing Switch New Horizons (Switch) – March 20th
It looks like rough living in Animal Crossing New Horizons. For the first time in the series, forget a town. You’ll be on a deserted island! The latest entry in the series looks to switch things up a bit (no pun intended). In addition to the locale being new, it also feels like an experience that is much more customizable. Players will be able to customize not just their home but also the island itself! Make paths, place furniture, it feels like the entire area is yours to design. You’ll also be able to build tools from the materials you collect. Arguably this biggest addition of all?
Something almost all returning and new fans will love, true multiplayer. The title will have both local and online multiplayer. The online multiplayer will support up to eight villagers on one island and four locally. This is huge, previously players locally weren’t able to play at the same time and online multiplayer was less than smoothe. If the title delivers on all of its promises, then Animal Crossing New Horizon will likely be the most innovative entry in the series to date.
Doom Eternal (PC, PS4, XBO, Stadia) – March 20th
On the same day as New Horizons, we have a much different type of game, Doom Eternal. This title was revealed at E3 2019 revealing with it Doom’s new multiplayer, Battlemode. One player is the Doomslayer while the others are one of five playable demons that will also be able to summon AI demons for an even bigger bloodbath. The Demons are smarter and the ammo is limited, should make for a crazy good time. Everything about the game is promising to be bigger and badder than ever. Doomguy has a new arm blade the “Ballista.” You’ll use it spear demons followed by an explosion. There’s also the “Super Shotgun,” which can also be used for what sounds like impaling and grappling. The campaign is no exception to bigger, it will be longer than Doom 2016 with a campaign estimated to take 18-22 hours.
Two of the bigger things. The first one is the setting. It is called a literal Hell on Earth. It looks like we’ll need a bit of a cleanup, aisle Earth. The second and surprising is the invasion mechanic. This feels very Soulsbourne like. Players can invade other player’s worlds during the campaign as demons. Have no fear though, if you believe the world is chaotic enough, id Software did say that you can turn it off. Either way, there’s a lot of Demons to kill in March, better get to it, folks!
Persona 5 Royal (PS4) – March 31st
Last but certainly not least, Persona 5 Royal. Atlus is re-releasing the 2017 JRPG with a new character, a new area to explore combined with updated visuals and other changes. My playthrough for Persona 5 when it released was right around 100 hours. P5R in addition to the new character and updates will also add-in a new semester. That’s good, I was worried the game would be a bit short… Persona 5 Royal will also add more city exploration options, new confidant social links, all of which will put our favorite students in new situations and cutscenes. I remember seeing a screenshot of the Thieves hanging out around what looked like a bar with a pool table. The vibe I’m getting from his title is making your confidants feel more like they do to Joker, your friends.
It looks like the nightlife will be popping. In the original title, the night activities were limited, all this sleeping, who does that? I’m looking forward to getting into some trouble! Updated visuals make this already gorgeous game something I can’t wait to get my hands on. P5R is out to steal our hearts all over again and we can’t wait.
