Indie developer System Era Softworks is bringing us a new look and feels to space exploration with Astroneer.
…a game about wonder, discovery, power, greed, mystery, and grand endeavor in a new age of expansion on the fringes of humanity.
The game takes place in the 25th century, where another gold rush of sorts is underway. Your goal as the explorer is to shape, mold and discover uncovered and unknown land. In the trailer (posted below) released with today’s announcement, you can see how the dev team has created a Minecraft-like world to sculpt and search. Dragging your characters tools and abilities across the terrain will shape it to your liking, as well as helping you discover valuable resources necessary for survival and expansion on these new planets.
Each world is procedurally-generated, each world with its own unique look and feel, never quite the same as the last. System Era seems to want a little more drive in the players that take on Astroneer, with an increased sense of discovery not just for fun, but to earn money along the way. Each discovery and resource can be gathered and potentially mined or sold for the top dollar, providing a little more incentive to dig deeper into each planet’s distinctive features. The game will also allow multiplayer exploration, increasing either the teamwork or competition while out in space.
System Era also added that they’re hoping to be on Steam Early Access by the first quarter of 2016, to test out the sandbox elements and balancing in a the real world environment. During that time, the multiplayer will also be limited to smaller co-op parties.
Astroneer looks mighty pretty already and seems to have a fun aesthetic, all compiled by a small team from quite a few well-known companies. System Era Softworks is made up of developers from 343 Industries, Disney, Valve, and Ubisoft; a fine looking formula for an already fine looking game.
