Lionsgate Films have finally revealed the official release date for the anticipated Borderlands movie. First announced in 2015, the live-action adaptation of the Borderlands video game has long been in development. Eventually, the film project was able to get into production after having several high-profile names got to attach to it. With an all-star cast of actors playing the characters, plus a famous director at the helm, the Borderlands movie became one of the more anticipated video game adaptations. Unfortunately, fans won’t be able to experience the film until next year.

Despite being in pre-production since 2015, filming didn’t begin until 2021. The film continued facing troubles, forced to have rewrites and reshoots earlier this year. Because of these last-minute rewrites and reshoots, the film’s release date is further out than fans would expect.

Lionsgate announced the release date for the Borderlands movie during San Diego Comic-Con. The film will release on August 9, 2024. Lionsgate also shares an exclusive one-minute preview of the film at its panel, showcasing never-before-seen footage of the movie.

The Borderlands live-action adaption follows the story of the Borderlands games, taking characters and plot points from the various titles. It’s not a straight adaptation of any particular title in the series, instead adapting the series as one motion picture.

Borderlands is directed by Eli Roth, an actor and director best known for his films like Hostel and House with a Clock in Its Walls. The film features an all-star cast that includes:

  • Cate Blanchett as Lilith
  • Kevin Hart as Roland
  • Jack Black as Claptrap
  • Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis
  • Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina
  • Florian Munteanu as Krieg

The film’s story follows the adventures of an intergalactic outlaw named Lilith, who returns to her home planet of Pandora. The planet is known for being home to extinct aliens, with ties to ancient powers and mythical Vaults filled with treasure and wealth. Lilith allies with a rag-tag crew of other outlaws to find a missing girl connected to one of the most powerful people in the galaxy.
