Baldur’s Gate 3 is just a few days from its much-hyped release on August 3rd, and gamers everywhere were hoping for the chance to preload the game to jump right into the action the second it releases. This is understandable, considering that with it comes the promise of an enormous amount of build options, gorgeous graphics, choices to make, and an engrossing story. Larian’s been working on this one for a very long time, and with their increased budget, a team of RPG veterans, and a legendary IP at their back, they are about to make a late claim for the game of the year. However, those of us hoping to preload the massive 122 GB game will sadly have to wait until the game officially releases, just like everyone else.

Why Won’t We Be Able to Preload Baldur’s Gate 3?

According to Baldur’s Gate 3‘s Steam Community update from Larian, Baldur’s Gate 3 will not be available for download until the launch day of August 3rd. Those of you who have previously downloaded the Early Access version of the game will be out of luck as well, as your previous saves will not carry over to the full release.

The reasoning behind being unable to preload the game is unclear, though it likely has something to do with the huge download size. Players initially assumed that their Early Access progress would be able to be carried over to the full release due to the sizeable amount of content there. Still, it appears that Larian has put enough tweaks into the game’s opening hours that it will be a different experience when you download the full release on August 3rd.

Larian has already delivered an outstanding preview with the Early Access edition of Baldur’s Gate 3, and now, with the release just days away, RPG fans are already foaming at the mouth at the reported 17,000 different endings, and they won’t have to wait much longer to play one of the most anticipated RPGs in quite some time.

With an expected 100-plus hours of gameplay on tap, we should all be clearing our calendars for the foreseeable future. Larian delivered with Divinity: Original Sin 2, and all signs point to them outdoing themselves once again.

Baldur’s Gate 3 will release on August 3rd for PC and Mac and September 6th for PS5. Pre-orders are available now.
