In Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dungeons and Dragons, increasing your Health often means the difference between a triumphant life and a pitiful death. Some classes make surviving easier for beginners, but increasing HP is essential for everyone. Knowing how to gain more Hit Points is critical regardless of your race, class, or play style. Adding a bit of durability to your characters is one of the first things most players will want to do. Here are the most important things to know about how to increase your Health in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How To Increase Your Health
The good news is every class gains Health simply by leveling up. That means that no matter what kind of character you’re playing, your Hit Points will steadily increase over time. As a result, you’ll be able to take increasing levels of punishment without being Downed. The bad news is not every class gains Health equally. A character’s intended role determines how much health they gain per level. Glass cannon spellcasters like Wizards and Sorcerers don’t earn as much per level as Fighters and Barbarians who are designed to stay in the thick of battle, and so on.
Having a high Constitution increases your Health gains at each level. If you want to play a character with high HP, you’ll want to invest some Attribute Points into Constitution. In this Larian Studios title, gaining Attribute Points is rare, however. You’re better off investing heavily in Constitution during character creation than trying to play catch-up later. Players can further increase their per-level Health gains by taking the Tough feat. Tough, available to all characters starting at Level 4, automatically increases your maximum HP by 2 per level.
Though leveling up, raising Constitution, and taking the Tough feat all work, they aren’t the only option. Characters can also temporarily raise their Health with the use of magic. The Level 2 Abjuration spell Aid, for example, not only heals allies for 5 HP but also increases their maximum HP by 5 until the next Long Rest you take. This kind of temporary buff to max HP requires spending a spell slot on it, which is a bit of a trade-off, but if the highest possible Health is your goal, spells like this are the only way to get it. One or two HP can save a character’s life, so it’s worth weighing every option, especially on the highest difficulty level in Baldur’s Gate 3.
