So far, Baldur’s Gate 3 has proven to be one of the most accurate interpretations of D&D in video game form. By utilizing many rules from D&D 5E, any player familiar with TTRPG is sure to have a smooth transition into the realm of Baldur’s Gate. Things like dice rolls, Skill Checks, classes, enemies, and locations are all taken straight from D&D. However, the most remarkable thing that Badlur’s Gate 3 has added from D&D is the spells. Usually, magic spells have an extensive variety of effects in D&D, letting players’ imaginations run wild. Ranging from destructive fireballs to creative illusions, here are some of the most interesting spells in Baldur’s Gate 3.

5. Command

Command is one of Baldur's Gate 3's most interesting spells.

Starting, Command is a highly versatile spell and is one of Baldur’s Gate 3’s most interesting spells. Command is a 1st level Enchantment spell that forces an enemy to obey your commands. This includes causing them to flee, move closer, freeze, drop to the ground, and drop their weapon. Already, the amount of things that players can accomplish with this spell makes it an excellent early-game addition to your spell book. However, what makes it interesting is the amount of creativity that players can have with this spell. This includes manipulating the battlefield for strategic advantages or forcing enemies off high ground. Although the spell doesn’t have a lot of firepower, Command is a great spell to have with some intuitive thinking.

4. Knock

Knock is a great spell in Baldur's Gate 3.

On the surface, Knock can feel like a dull spell; however, it serves as one of Baldur’s Gate 3‘s most interesting spells in application. Knock is a 2nd level Transmutation spell that simply unlocks an object held by a mundane lock. Although simple, Knock is a very powerful alternative to the usual advantages of having a Rogue in your party. Instead of needing a Rogue or lockpicker, players can rely on their Wizard for even more versatility. Additionally, many spells have checks that need to be made before they take effect. Knock, on the other hand, will occur with no real downsides. Knock is the perfect spell for any player who loves the Swiss-army knife style of Wizard gameplay, utilizing versatile spells in many unique situations.

3. Fireball

Fireball is a classic spell that returns in Baldur's Gate 3.

Out of any spell in the game, Fireball is arguably the most iconic and is a staple among D&D fans. Fireball is a 3rd level Evocation spell that causes a massive explosion at the location, dealing tons of damage in an area. Already, dealing 8D6 AoE damage makes Fireball one of the game’s best destructive spells. However, what makes it one of Baldur Gate 3’s most interesting spells is the strategy that goes into using it. Due to its massive AoE, players must plan out their uses of the spell to optimize damage and minimize friendly fire. Additionally, the impact and animations of the spell are amazing to watch. Overall, Baldur Gate 3 does one of D&D’s most iconic spells correctly.

2. Minor Illusion

Minor Illusion is a great spell in BG3.

Overall, the most interesting spells of Baldur Gate 3 tend to be those with unique effects, and Minor Illusion is no exception. Minor Illusion is a Cantrip Illusion spell that creates an illusion that distracts nearby creatures. Simply put, this spell sounds a bit useless. However, much like many of the spells on this list, it has compelling potential. When playing a party more focused on stealth, a spell like this can create many fantastic scenarios. Distracting guards to allow your allies to get the jump on foes or causing enemies to look away while your party members get into position for combat are just a few of this spell’s many uses. As far as Cantrips go, Minor Illusion is arguably the best spell in terms of stealth.

1. Misty Step

Finally, the most interesting spell in Baldur Gate 3 would have to be Misty Step, a 2nd level Conjuration spell that allows the caster to teleport a short distance to a spot in their line of sight. For your generally frail spellcasters, this is already an invaluable resource. The main use of the spell involves teleporting out of danger quickly to save the lives of squishy Wizards. However, the spell can also be used for strategic repositioning, securing high ground, ambushing enemies, and much more. Overall, players will get as much as they put into Misty Step, making it one of the best and most interesting spells in Baldur Gate 3.
