The Spino creature in Ark: Survival Ascended is a fearsome aquatic dino, and one you should definitely tame when you have the chance. Spinos often appear in beginner areas, hanging out on the beaches and eating unsuspecting fish that come their way. Spinos, much like Sarcos, can be very useful tames, considering how effective they are both on land and in the water. You get the best of both worlds with them, but even though they appear in beginner areas, they can be quite a pain to slow down and knock out without using specific trapping methods.
Capturing a Spino can be tricky. They’re fast, large, and always aggressive. While you won’t need a particular type of trap for them, you’ll need to use something at least effective enough to hold the large dino in place while you knock it out safely. There are specific resources that you will need.
- Crossbow or Longneck Rifle
- Tranq Arrows or Tranq Darts
- Raw Fish Meat or Raw Prime Fish Meat
- 4-5x Behemoth Gateways and 2x Behemoth Gates -OR- 7-8x Dinosaur Gateways and Gates
This is our in-depth explanation of how to trap and tame a Spino.
- Place down your Behemoth Gateways or Dinosaur Gateways
Depending on the method you choose, you will place your traps in different shapes. If you use Behemoth Gateways, you should set them up so they are parallel with each other, forming a hallway of sorts. Each should have just enough space between them that you can squeeze through them without allowing a dinosaur out.
If you choose to use Dinosaur Gateways, you should create a ring with them so they will act as a gate for the dinosaur, with the exception of one gateway. The final gateway should be added in once you’ve lured the Spino into the trap. - Add doors
Once you’ve created your Behemoth Gateway “Hallway,” you must add in doors. You should put one door on the first gateway in your “Hallway” and one on the final Gateway. This should close off the trap entirely, with the exception of the human-sized gaps in between your Behemoth Gateways. If you chose to use Dinosaur Gateways instead, doors are required on every gateway.
- Lure the Spino into your trap
This step is pretty easy. Once the trap is constructed, close one of the Behemoth Gates, leaving the other wide open for the Spino to wander into. Head outside and make the Spino Aggro on you, then lead it into the trap. Once it’s inside, slip through the openings in the side of your trap and quickly shut the Behemoth Gate before it can escape.
Alternatively, if you chose to use Dinosaur Gateways, just place the final Gateway, locking the Spino inside. - Knock out and feed the Spino
Once the Spino is helpless in your new trap, it’s time to start knocking it out. Shoot it with either a Crossbow or a Longneck Rifle with tranquilizer ammo. Be sure to space out your shots by about 30 seconds or so to give the Narcotics time to do their thing and raise the Spino’s Torpidity. When it’s finally down, access the Spino’s inventory and feel it either Raw Fish Meat or Raw Prime Fish Meat.
