After Nyx gave Zagreus the Mirror of Night, chances are that you spent every last Chthonic Key and drop of Darkness you had to unlock and upgrade everything. There are so many upgrades worth getting, while others aren’t. Fortunately, we unlocked each one and upgraded them to max level, so you don’t have to. Let’s look at the ten best Mirror of Night upgrades in Hades.
Best Mirror of Night Upgrades in Hades
The Mirror of Night hosts 12 upgrades, each with a secondary ability, for a total of 24. These abilities range from giving you more damage power to earning more Obol at the beginning of each run. We broke down our list of the ten best upgrades so that you don’t need to buy them all and find out for yourself.
10. Shadow Presence
This ability is one of the first you can obtain for ten Darkness. It grants you an additional +10% damage whenever you strike an enemy from behind. You can upgrade this ability five times for +50% damage. This ability made our list because with how often enemies crowd you, you’re bound to hit enemies from behind, regardless. You are giving yourself an extra push for each one that you hit sounds like an excellent idea to me.
9. Dark Regeneration
Dark Regeneration is the second ability you can get from the Mirror. It also starts at ten Darkness and allows you to upgrade it three times for a total of 70 Darkness. Whenever you start your run, you’ll have an extra heart with this ability turned on. When you upgrade it all the way, then you’ll start each run with three hearts! When you’re fighting Hades at the very end, you’re going to be grateful that you had extra hearts to spare.
8. Dark Foresight
You know how when you choose a room, the Laurel above the door dictates what you can find inside? Well, Dark Foresight gives you +2% greater chance for Gold Laurel rewards. This means that you’ll possibly have access to more Obols, better Boons, Hammers, and Poms of Power. You can upgrade this ability to ten ranks for a total of +20% chance. Each rank costs 150 Darkness, but the rewards are well worth it.

You don’t know how great Fated Persuasion is until you use it yourself. For 30 Chthonic Keys, and 1,000 Darkness, you can be granted a dice roll to be used to randomly alter your Boon and Well of Charon choices. You can get up to four dice rolls for 10,000 Darkness total, which was the perfect number for us whenever we used it.
6. Boiling Blood
We thought Boiling Blood was one of the more useful abilities you could have when it’s maxed out. You get +10% attack damage and special damage when attacking enemies that have ammo in them. When paired with our best ability, Internal Soul, you can spread stack them on a single enemy. You can upgrade it five times, offering +50% damage. We thought this was particularly useful in boss fights. For example, when fighting Megaera, we would load her up with ammo and then use Boiling Blood’s ability to deal even more damage than normal.
5. Infernal Soul
Infernal Soul allows you to gain additional ammo. You can upgrade it twice for three ammo gems in total. As we explained above, we pair this with Boiling Blood to get the most damage out of boss battles. It’s also great because, in total, you only need 100 Darkness to max our Infernal Soul. We think it’s been in our rotation since the moment we unlocked it.

The Best Keepsakes in Hades4. Deep Pockets
We only put Deep Pockets this high on the list because of the amount of times it has come in handy. You’re granted 10 Obols at the start of each run. You can upgrade it ten times which means that you can start runs with 100 Obol to spend already. We thought that with this ability, we were able to purchase things much earlier in the runs, making our battle with Hades that much easier.
3. Gods’ Pride
God’s Pride gives you a 1% chance for a Boon to be Epic. While this doesn’t seem like a lot, you can upgrade it 20 times to make that chance 20%. It will cost you a total of 2,000 Darkness to get to that point, but Epic boons tend to be the most powerful. This is another one that we’ve had in our rotation from the moment we unlocked it. We feel that once you get the hang of which Boons you prefer, this really helps in customizing each run.
2. Thick Skin
Thick Skin, while not the best ability out there, is incredibly useful. This grand you an addition +5 to your overall health. You’re able to upgrade it a total of ten times for +50 health. Since the entire point of each run is to survive until the end, this helps in doing that. Paired with a maxed-out Death Defiance, you’ll last longer than ever before.
1. Death Defiance
We put Death Defiance at the top of our Hades mirror upgrades list because we believe it’s the best ability you can get and immediately max out. It revives you from death and gives you 50% health. You can upgrade it three times to have three extra chances to die and be revived. This was all too helpful throughout every single run, and we don’t think we would have played as often as we did without it. The best part is that to completely upgrade it, you only need 1,530 Darkness.
Hades is available on mobile, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
