It’s normal to feel nervous about an upcoming job interview, especially in a corporate setting. First impressions are essential. But a Pennsylvania author and speaker takes things to the next level as she gives people interview tips. According to her, there are so many things you can do wrong when you’re making a first impression toward a prospective employer. Her video is enough to give people plenty of stress about how they appear at their next interview!
Titled, “Things I don’t wanna see in a job interview in under a minute,” Author and speaker Anna Papalia sits down at a desk with a resume, dressed to the nines, and ready to give you anxiety from her advice. She starts by saying, “I’m expecting that you know how to shake my hand,” and makes the correct gesture. Followed by, “Give me a full handshake with eye contact and say, ‘It’s nice to meet you.’”
Anna also says she’ll offer you something to drink and, at this point, you’re not supposed to ask for coffee with cream and sugar. Why? Because, as Anna states, “I am NOT a barista. Just ask for water or accept whatever I offer.” So you need training to hand over a packet of sugar and a bit of cream? No interview I’ve been to asks if I wanted a fancy coffee.
Some other things Anna touches upon are how you sit at your interview. She says you’re not supposed to wait for her to instruct you on where to sit. Also, interviewees should put their hands on the table, otherwise you look “untrustworthy” to the interviewer. And if you want to take notes during the interview? According to Anna, this should never be done on a phone. Instead, you should have a notepad with you to write down any important facts about the job.
Personally, I even felt judged by Anna’s interview advice and I wasn’t even the one being interviewed. She made me want a corporate job even less than I already do. And the straightforward and off-putting way she delivered this information makes me want to turn the other way.
As one commenter pointed out, “She needs to realize this is a job interview, not a police interrogation,” said one commenter. Another person hilariously asked, “How do I quit in advance?”
It’s fine to want to help people score a job in our day and age where it’s so difficult to find decent jobs in the first place. But you also don’t want to be at the demands of an employer who obviously expects the world of you right off the bat.
