French celebrity Brigitte Bardot has recently passed away at the age of 91, and there’s no doubt her life had a huge impact across the globe. Plenty of people looked up to her for her outspoken views on animal rights, among other things, and singer Chappell Roan was one of the many fans who shared a tribute for the late French icon. However, Roan’s condolences were short-lived after she quickly went back on her words and even deleted her Instagram story post about Bardot.
“Holy [expletive],” the “Good Luck, Babe!” songwriter exclaimed in her story. “I did not know all that insane [expletive] Ms. Bardot stood for obv I don’t condone it. Very disappointing to learn.” For those unaware, Brigitte Bardot’s deep love for animals didn’t mean she felt the same about her fellow humans.
According to AP News, the French star was “convicted and fined five times” for racial hate crimes. Bardot was openly adamant about her strong opposition to Muslims, especially any Islamic immigrants who came into France. Praise where praise is due for the good she did for animals, but her far-right views most certainly make her worthy of strong criticism.
Chappell Roan Has Always Had a Progressive Stance
Clearly, Chappell Roan did not know about how radically right-leaning and racist Brigitte Bardot was, so the quick response to retracting her praise for the famous Frenchwoman was the best move. Roan is progressive in her political views but has also shared her criticism for both the left and the right. Interviewed by the Guardian, the “Pink Pony Club” singer claims she has many issues with the government and feels there are problems on both sides.

As a result, she doesn’t feel it’s right to endorse either side. For example, she stands for trans rights but also believes cis people shouldn’t be making decisions for the trans community, among other things. All that said, Roan most certainly would not be siding with Bardot’s views, based on her track record, politically speaking.
Overall, the online reaction to Chappell Roan’s response to her initial praise for Brigitte Bardot was well-received. “I think she did the right thing here,” remarked a Redditor. “She learned new info and corrected herself,” and almost 20K others agreed with their upvotes. “Yeah, literally the opposite of what Sydney Sweeney did: acknowledged her mistake, didnt play coy, made a legitimate apology and corrected herself,” added another. “It’s actually great to see her not doubling down on it and admit it was wrong. That was refreshing to see,” expressed a third.
As the one commenter pointed out, Sydney Sweeney stubbornly refused to apologize for the American Eagle ad controversy, as MAGA and Trump were very pleased to have her “on their side.” Fortunately, it seems Chappell Roan has her head on straight and understands how to properly respond after making a public mistake.
