As Minnesota’s streets are flooded with civil unrest, political leaders struggle to control the chaos. Following the tragic death of Renee Good, protests have been ongoing in Minneapolis and the surrounding areas. Tensions continue to rise as residents and ICE agents clash, the violence spurring a letter by Governor Walz, which was posted publicly on Instagram.
In the letter, the governor appeals to both the president and Minnesotans. “Let’s turn the temperature down. Stop this campaign of retribution. This is not who we are,” he writes directly to President Trump. To Minnesotans, he writes, “I know this is scary. We can—and we must—speak out loudly, urgently, but also peacefully. We cannot fan the flames of chaos. that’s what he wants.”
The letter, which was short and direct, addressed both sides in the warring streets of Minneapolis. However, the reception of Governor Walz’s words, particularly on Reddit, has been mixed.
“Winston Churchill’s quote comes to mind here: You don’t negotiate with a tiger when your head is in its mouth!” A commenter says. While the statement was met with anger, others considered its purpose. One Reddit user explains, saying, “The purpose of a statement like this, apart from the obvious encouragement to Minnesotans, is to put Trump into a position of either denying he’s engaging in ‘retribution’ or, by his silence, admitting that he is engaging in it. We all know Trump won’t respond to this with the former sort of statement, so Walz is pointing out the truth of the latter statement.”
Despite Walz’s request for civility, many remain opposed to the sentiment. Some argue that a ceasefire at this point is impossible, given the course ICE’s actions have set. “You can’t appeal to someone’s humanity when they don’t have any. Trump doesn’t care about Americans,” one Reddit user says.
As the situation escalates, Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act. Under this call to action, the U.S. military would be sent to end the riots following Good’s death. On Truth Social, the president wrote, “If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State.”
