California Hairstylist Exposes Woman Who Fled Without Paying $2,500 for Extensions, Sparks Transphobic Backlash Online: ‘First of All Why Are You Calling Him a Her?’

The transphobia isn’t necessary

Business owners have the right to speak out when someone steals from them, but public exposure can sometimes lead to harmful backlash, including racist, homophobic, or transphobic comments. That was the case for a California hairstylist who shared a video on TikTok after a client allegedly skipped out on paying.

According to the stylist, a woman booked an appointment under the name Sophia Gonzalez and received 24-inch hair extensions worth $2,500. After the service was completed, the customer said she needed to apply her eyelashes before paying. The stylist agreed, but the woman never returned and left without settling the bill.

The hairstylist later posted the video, hoping someone could help identify the customer, which sparked widespread attention online.

The California hairstylist later explained how deeply the incident affected her employee. She shared that the stylist, Cat, had spent nine hours working on the extensions and was in tears when she realized the client had left without paying. Losing $2,500 was a major financial hit.

The salon owner also noted that, under California law, theft over $950 may qualify as grand theft. She again asked the public for help identifying the woman and confirmed that police had been contacted. Although the client’s card was on file, it was not valid.

She also addressed why Cat allowed the woman to step outside to apply her eyelashes. According to the owner, Cat felt it was safer not to confront her, especially since the client was physically larger and could have reacted aggressively. She emphasized that Cat would not be held responsible for the loss.

In a follow-up video, the hairstylist shared footage Cat had recorded during the appointment, which gave viewers a clearer look at the suspect. Unfortunately, this led to some transphobic comments online, something the stylist did not support.

In a later update, the owner suggested that progress was being made toward accountability, though no further details have been released.

People Reacting to the California Hairstylist Exposing the Woman

While the woman’s actions were clearly wrong and she should be held accountable, that did not justify the wave of transphobic comments that followed. Unfortunately, many people used the situation as an excuse to misgender her and make disrespectful remarks.

Some commenters repeatedly referred to her as a man. One wrote, “First of all why are you calling him a her.” Another replied, “She’s being respectful to a human being.” Others continued with hostile comments, arguing that she should be identified using her legal name rather than her chosen one.

Several posts focused more on attacking her gender identity than on the theft itself, showing how quickly online discussions can turn into harassment. Holding someone accountable for wrongdoing should never involve degrading or dehumanizing language.

Many people pushed back against the hateful comments directed at the California woman. “The transphobia in these comments is beyond unacceptable,” one person wrote. Another added, “You can criticize someone’s actions without being bigoted. They’re two separate things.”

Others shifted the focus back to the theft itself. One commenter questioned why the salon didn’t require payment upfront for such an expensive service, writing, “Why aren’t places charging at least a deposit for something that costs that much?” Another said, “I’m appalled that people care more about gender than the stylist who was stolen from.”

At the end of the day, the main issue is the theft and the harm it caused to the salon and its employees, not the woman’s gender identity.
