It’s getting more and more expensive to live in America, and with that, even more people are struggling just to survive. While billionaires continue to grow richer, the gap between the rich and the poor has increased significantly. While President Trump promised to make America great again, the reality for many is that groceries and bills have continued to rise under his administration. One 65-year-old Minnesota woman named Sharron could be heard breaking down while speaking with a C-SPAN host. She said, “I cannot afford to eat.”

The Minnesota woman explained that she is legally blind and cannot drive a car. She said that under the Biden administration she was doing okay because of SNAP benefits, but now, due to Trump’s decisions, she can barely survive. She recently visited her doctor and discovered that she had lost 28 pounds.

The Minnesota woman nearly broke into tears as she explained that she used to be able to set aside $100 for food along with her SNAP benefits and buy fresh fruits and vegetables. But now, with electricity and gas bills so expensive, she can only spend $65 on food. She claimed that she received $80 in SNAP benefits under the Joe Biden administration; however, under the Trump administration, that benefit was reduced to $24 and then down to $12.

The Minnesota woman cried out as she listed what little food she had left: “I have three potatoes, half a tomato, three bananas, one apple, one can of soup, a loaf of bread, one egg, and one can of green beans.” She said she lives 15 miles out of town and, because she is legally blind, she cannot travel to a food shelf. The Minnesota woman added that she used to volunteer at a food shelf, but now she cannot even do that. She questioned why it always seems to be poor people helping other poor people.

On the internet, many users said they were heartbroken hearing the Minnesota woman’s desperate words. The majority agreed that what is happening in America is not acceptable. “Sickening. A reality where your local grocery store throws away thousands and thousands of dollars of food a day and citizens are starving slowly to death,” one user said.

Others shared their own experiences regarding the current situation with SNAP benefits. “My hospice aide lost her SNAP benefits as well. She was eventually evicted from her home and lives here with me now. We all have enough to eat and pay bills, so don’t think I’m trying to get people to send money. I’m just saying that there’s more people in dire circumstances than not,” another user said.
