A California barbecue restaurant is facing backlash online after Mr. Tendernism, the viral personality widely credited with helping build its brand, confirmed that he is no longer with the business. Walter Johnson, better known to fans as “Unc” or Mr. Tendernism, shared a video on social media stating that he has parted ways with Destination Smokehouse after more than five years.
“I’m not at Destination Smokehouse. I’m with Tendernism now,” he announced in a video uploaded via TikTok. “I had to go on my own so that way I can do what I have to do.” According to his manager, who set up a GoFundMe page on his behalf, Johnson was fired from the restaurant.
While the reason he was let go has not been released, his barbecue skills had drawn massive crowds to the business, with many awestruck by how he could easily lift a rib bone out of the meat as it fell off cleanly. Popular food influencers like Jordan The Stallion and Keith Lee were among those who stopped by. The GoFundMe launched in support of Johnson’s next chapter has raised more than $41,000 toward its $50,000 goal. According to the fundraiser, he plans to launch his own food truck, travel city to city reviewing small BBQ and soul food restaurants, and spotlight locally owned businesses.
