Justin Timberlake is back in the headlines, not for a new single, but for a courtroom move that has everyone talking. The pop star has filed a lawsuit to block the release of police bodycam footage from his 2024 drunk driving arrest in Sag Harbor, and fans have thoughts.
Justin Timberlake’s DWI Arrest Video at the Center of Legal Fight
According to court filings via Page Six, the Memphis native is asking a Suffolk County Supreme Court judge to prevent the Village of Sag Harbor from releasing footage captured during his June 2024 traffic stop. The video is tied to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by media outlets.
In the lawsuit, Timberlake argues he is shown “in an acutely vulnerable state during a roadside encounter with law enforcement.” The filing further claims the footage contains “intimate details” of his “physical appearance, demeanor, speech, and conduct” during the field sobriety test, arrest, and confinement.
His attorney, Michael Del Piano, contends the release would cause “severe and irreparable harm” to Timberlake’s “personal and professional reputation” and open him up to “public ridicule and harassment.” The lawyer also argues the footage serves “no legitimate public interest in understanding the operations of government” and that “disclosure of this footage would constitute an unwarranted invasion” of the singer’s privacy.
The 45-year-old Grammy winner was arrested after allegedly running a stop sign and swerving between lanes. Though he pleaded not guilty to driving while intoxicated, he ultimately pleaded guilty to driving while impaired by alcohol. After sentencing, he publicly warned, “This is a mistake that I made, but I am hoping that whoever is watching and listening right now can learn from this mistake.”
Netizens Beg for Bodycam Release: ‘RELEASE THE TAPESSS’
On Reddit, the reaction has been swift and ruthless, as fans wondered why the star is fighting to conceal the video. “means it’s gotta be good,” one user wrote. Another joked, “I hope the footage gets Timberleaked.”
Some admitted the lawsuit sparked new curiosity about the almost forgotten issue: “Literally the thought of body cam footage from his arrest had not even crossed my mind before this but now I am demanding the tapes be released.” Others speculated, “This isn’t a regular “drunk” video, he was probably acting like a complete ass.”
Critics questioned why he was driving at all: “How these people don’t hire a full-time driver for themselves is insane to me. Obviously so addicted to control.”
And then there were the blunt takes, still calling for the release of the footage: “I would rather pay to see it than buy tickets to his concert. Maybe they can world tour the body cam footage.” One fan summed up the frenzy: “You don’t understand how much I need this footage RELEASE THE TAPESSS.”
Timberlake’s attempt to keep the footage sealed has only amplified the noise.
