It’s no secret that plenty of older generations are more fond of conservatives and of President Trump, and that rings true for one Vietnamese grandmother from Texas who has gone viral on social media. The Texan-Vietnamese grandma even explained why she likes Trump so much as to scold her grandson, who ironically voted for Democrats such as Biden and Harris in the previous 2024 election.
TikTok user @colecoker3, aka Cole Coker from Houston, Texas, is the chastised grandson in question, and on March 5, his Vietnamese-American grandmother went viral after ranting to him about Democrats while praising Trump. “What do you think about Donald Trump?” asks the grandson, to which the grandmother answers, “I love Donald Trump, he’s strong. He say he do it, he do it!”
When the grandson replied with, “I voted for Joe Biden… and then I voted for Kamala,” his grandmother lashed out, calling him out, “You’re crazy! Never vote for Democrat!… They’re [expletive],” likening Democrats to the tail-end of the human digestive tract. Apart from praising Donald Trump and slandering Democrats, Coker’s grandmother never went into much detail.
Still, Coker’s grandmother has earned praise on multiple social media platforms for her views, with comments such as, “If you Vietnamese, you already know how most Vietnamese grandmas are. They are more conservative than conservatives. 🤣 🤣,” explaining her outlook. “💯- this is typical of Vietnamese people with family members. Straight up and blunt, no sugarcoating it! She nailed it!” adds another commenter.
Other Vietnamese Immigrants Have a Different Experience
Sadly, it appears Coker’s grandmother might be among the lucky ones who hadn’t experienced Trump’s anti-immigrant policies. Across the US, many old Vietnamese immigrants have suffered at the hands of federal agencies seeking to deport people of color, such as what happened to a Vietnamese mother of three who was deported despite living in the US for 30 years.
Another case, a legal, tax-paying Vietnamese father who had been living in the US since childhood, also got detained by ICE and now faces deportation over a marijuana charge from a decade ago. There were also numerous and similar detention and pending deportation cases against the Vietnamese last year; those, along with economic strife, led to divided sentiments for President Trump in the Vietnamese community.
Hence, some people online, particularly in the YouTube comment section, have something to say to Republican-leaning Vietnamese, such as, “these people forget: no matter the ideology, left or right, a tyrant is a tyrant.” And even those who voted for Trump got a rather worrying analogy, “This is like if I was a tree and voted for the axe to protect me.”
