Live television can often be unpredictable, but something particularly unexpected happened while journalist Alexis Martin was reporting on U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Cincinnati, Ohio: a man lit a cigarette and ate it. The scene quickly went viral on social media, as viewers were puzzled about why the Ohio man committed such an unhinged act.
In a video shared on social media, the Fox 19 reporter discusses Trump’s recent visit while standing in a street in Cincinnati. A man approaches the camera behind the reporter. He lights a cigarette, takes a drag, and shows it to the camera while smiling. Finally, he puts the lit end of the cigarette in his mouth and starts chewing it. The camera soon cuts to footage of Donald Trump, but not quickly enough to prevent him from stealing the spotlight.
Despite becoming a celebrity for a day, however, the Cincinnati resident was not identified at the time of this report.
Internet Reacts to Unhinged Ohio Man
As expected, most people online considered the whole scene hilarious: “Who needs Florida Man when we have Ohio Man.” Most viewers seemed to enjoy the antics of the hero of the day, saying that is how “a legend is born,” and that the scene was “pretty on brand for Ohio. Literally a perfect example of the people.”
Others commented on how “Reporters really have to be ready for any surprise during live coverage,” as folks often use these opportunities to snatch a moment of fame. “I can’t tell if this is performance art, a dare gone wrong, or pure chaos, but watching someone literally chew a cigarette on live TV is peak 2026 energy. Only in Ohio,” one social media user commented.
While the Ohio man entertained most viewers, one person was not impressed. According to them, “I’ve done it. It’s not that hard. And I don’t smoke. Ok, except for chewing the filter. I didn’t think of that. But I did win a $5 pitcher of beer, which my friends drank while I was buzzed on nicotine.”
