Washington D.C. Woman Alleges Airline Fat-Shamed Her While Making Her Change Seats: ‘They Had No Business Treating You That Way’

That was poorly handled, honestly

Following a recent trip to Jamaica, a woman in Washington, D.C., is now calling out the airline she used, alleging her journey was nothing short of a “humiliation ritual.” The passenger said she had boarded a flight on Southwest Airlines and, since she was a plus-size traveler, she purchased an exit-row seat in advance because it offers extra legroom.

After finding her seat, she asked a flight attendant for a seatbelt extender. However, the attendant told her she could not remain in the exit row because passengers sitting there cannot use seatbelt extenders due to safety regulations. The passenger said she did not object to the rule and asked the crew to place her in any available seat. “I said, put me wherever, cause I don’t wanna cause no problems in the airport, I wanna get to where I’m going safely and quickly. I don’t want no issues in the air,” she explained in the video she shared to TikTok.

The woman said that after the attendant left, another staff member came to help her move to a different seat. But according to her, the other woman handled the situation in a way that was “really embarrassing” for her.

‘She Can’t Fit Anywhere’

While trying to find a spot where the woman could be moved, the employee allegedly kept loudly telling the other passengers who offered to switch, “No, she can’t fit there… We need to find somewhere for her to fit because she can’t fit anywhere.”

The passenger was unhappy that others could overhear the conversation. “The whole plane doesn’t need to know that I have to move my seat because I need a seatbelt extender,” she said, describing the moment as “very uncomfortable.” After she was later moved to a seat in the back of the plane, she complained to the staff that the issue could have been handled more discreetly without announcing it to other passengers.

The staff allegedly brushed it off, told her she simply had to follow the rules, and even handed her a safety pamphlet to read. Another employee who later came by also suggested that she might even need to purchase two seats.

The woman said the experience eventually broke her down to tears. “I have been disrespected on this plane as a paying customer and all I did was select the wrong seat,” she said. “Had I known I didn’t need to sit there, I wouldn’t have selected the seat. It’s really that simple.”

The Washington D.C. woman claims that once the flight was underway, she noticed a sudden shift in how the crew interacted with her, with staff members offering her drinks, snacks, and small Southwest-branded items. Even before the plane landed, the employee she had criticized reportedly approached her again to apologize. The woman acknowledged the apology but made it clear that the incident had already affected her and that she still intended to file a formal complaint about how the situation was handled.

Netizens React to the Woman’s Story

In the comments, many viewers said they felt the incident described by the passenger was handled poorly and agreed that the way it was communicated could have been more discreet. “That was just mean spirited,” one person remarked.

Another commented, “This is dehumanizing. This shocked me to my core and I’m so sorry.” A third wrote, “They had no business treating you that way. You were compliant,” while a fourth said that what she experienced was “extremely unfair and absolutely unacceptable.”
