A barber in Cincinnati, Ohio, broke down in happy tears after his long-time nonverbal client thanked him. With the help of a communication device, the teenage client told him he was grateful for the acceptance and the opportunity.
The clip was shared on TikTok by The Gifted Event, a nonprofit initiative founded by Vernon Jackson, the aforementioned barber. Owner of Noble Barber & Beauty, Vernon specializes in providing haircuts to children with special needs.
The Ohio barber explained in the clip that his nonverbal client hadn’t had a haircut in a barbershop or salon since he was five years old. Experiences at these establishments had been traumatic for him, forcing his mother to cut his hair at home. However, he turned to Vernon’s help, trying to make haircuts at barbershops something he could be comfortable with.
In total, and ever since 2023, the Ohio boy got 16 haircuts at Noble Barber & Beauty, all thanks to Vernon. The barber even shared some of the first haircuts, in which the boy ran out of the chair, overwhelmed by the environment but also feeling accepted by the barber.
“He thanks me, but he keeps running from me,” Vernon said, jokingly, as he showed the screen of the boy’s communication device where he thanked him. “He loves me, tho.”
‘Celebrate Small Victories’
Then, Vernon read another message written by his nonverbal client. It read, “I’d like to thank you for accepting me. I know I am a difficult client, but you gave me a chance, and I’m grateful for it.”
The Ohio barber was speechless as emotion filled his heart, soul, and tear ducts. Then, in a recent haircut appointment, the boy delivered a message through Vernon. The recipient? Other parents. The message read, “I want to tell parents they have to celebrate small victories.”
After all, the boy had managed to overcome the traumatic past of barbershop haircuts, something extremely admirable. More than 227,000 people seemed to agree, as the clip went viral.
“He has so much to say!” one user said. Another person commented, “Video starts to get blurry at 0:32.” A third netizen added, “Thank you for doing what you do and treating everyone with the utmost kindness and respect.”
It appears that the boy has finally found the best barber in the world.
