People all over social media share their frustration with the price of goods and services going up significantly in the U.S. Some need oil to warm their homes and just about everyone needs an AC. That’s on top of needing groceries. One Kentucky woman was absolutely shocked when she discovered that her electric bill was higher than she bargained for. Now, she’s speaking out about her story and asking if others have experienced a high electric bill like she has, despite not using her electricity whatsoever, she claims.
Shae (TikTok/haesicks2) shares that she gets her electricity through AEP. However, she’s been away from home for several months and will be returning soon. As she goes on to mention, “The area I’m from is one of the poorest areas in the country,” and yet, she argues, “I think we have some of the highest electric bills in the country.” On top of that, Shae says that AEP is “getting ready to increase the rates.”
Shae tells her audience she hasn’t been home to her house in Kentucky for three months. Still, like clockwork, she received her AEP electric bill. Allegedly, it ended up being a staggering $1200! Shae tells her audience, “That’s with nobody being at the house!”
Now, Shae has been following local people’s posts and speaking with people personally. One person told her their electric bill for a month was $1,900. Full stop, that’s shameful for a month of electric. And now they’re looking to increase their prices once again.
Shae says about this, “Honestly, people in Appalachia are probably going to have to move” because they can’t afford this. How are people expected to survive when even poverty-stricken areas are paying that much in electricity? That’s way too high even if someone was living there full-time.
People Reacted With Disgust and Shared the Cost of Their Electric Bills
Unsurprisingly, Shae isn’t the only one dealing with absurdly high electricity bills. People flooded the comment section, sharing cost hikes and numbers, and even suggestions on mitigating costs. One commenter pointed out, “You are paying the bills for the data centers and their taxes.” Not to mention the massive amount of water and energy it takes to run those buildings.
Another commenter stated, “FYI Trump nominated three new TVA board members last year. Everyone I know in my small town in TN has been complaining of how high their electric bills are for the past few months.”
One commenter claiming to be from New York shared that their “small, two bedroom” apartment costs them $700 in electricity. Normally, they said, it would only be around $100. Several people suggested investing in solar panels and power walls, which is certainly a solution. However, the fact electric companies are able to do this at all is a problem solar panels can’t fix. Many would argue — myself included — that electric companies shouldn’t be allowed to do this.
