A New York woman took her daughter to the doctor’s office as she was apparently suffering from the flu. After a nasal swab, she got home expecting to be charged, fully aware that she did not have the best medical insurance. To her shock, however, she found out that her bill was nearly $1,000.
Ginny, who goes by ginnyisgolden on TikTok, shared her daughter’s nose-swab story and her apparent disdain for the American healthcare system in a viral post. As of the writing of this article, it has garnered 1.4 million views, more than 102,100 likes, and 6,600 comments.
“I’m so tired of the American healthcare system,” the New York woman wrote in the clip’s description. After Ginny called her insurance horrible and even gave them the finger, as seen in the clip, she explained what caused that reaction. According to her, her five-month-old had a fever in February, so she took her to the doctor. At the doctor’s office, they took a nasal swab to test her for the flu and COVID, given that it is cold and flu season.
Fortunately for Ginny and her daughter, all tests came back negative, and, after a few days, the infant girl recovered just a few days later. Meanwhile, Ginny was expecting a medical bill to arrive at her doorstep at any given moment.
“I assume we’re gonna get a bill for it because we have horrible insurance,” the New York woman said. “[…] Google says that the max amount in most situations that you’ll pay for something like this is about $300.”
$1,000 Nasal Swab Bill, Reactions
Ginny said in the video that she considered that amount “a lot,” but she remained hopeful that her insurance could help cover part of the bill. She revealed, however, that she had been billed $984.
“Why does a nose swabt aht when you Google it says it won’t cost $1,000 cost $1,000?” she asked. “What do you mean by that? $1,000 for a Q-Tip up a nostril? What?“
In the end, Ginny’s medical insurance covered less than half of her bill, as she said in the clip. The New York mother now has to pay $443.27 for her daughter’s nasal swab.
The video sparked multiple reactions. Some users chose to directly attack the American healthcare system as a whole, with one user saying, “America doesn’t have a system – it’s an industry.” Others were left dumbfounded by the woman’s insurance, with one person asking, “You pay for insurance but have to pay for your medical bills?“
Other users, however, decided to brag about their countries’ healthcare systems, regarding them as superior. One user commented, “Thank God I live in Costa Rica,” and another said, “In Germany, we receive money for taking the baby to the doctor.”
By the looks of it, people emphasizing with a less-than-stellar medical insurance coverage led to its virality. As seen above, the gap between America’s healthcare system and systems from other countries also seemed to be a point of discussion. Hundreds, if not thousands, said that they would never receive a bill of such an amount for a nose swab.
For the time being, the New York woman is contemplating calling her insurance to see if she could, somehow, reduce the cost of her bill. Whether that effort will be fruitful or not is still unknown.
