A woman from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, named Casey, starred in a viral video that quickly gained attention as she described her arduous journey to obtain a new ID at the DMV after changing her legal name. The case sparked support across social media, as many people claimed to have faced similar hurdles in the past.
The clip was uploaded to Casey’s personal TikTok and quickly became a huge hit, garnering over 160,000 views and nearly 22,000 likes.
As Casey explains in the video, she recently got married and changed her legal name to Casey Cowden. Initially, it was easy to update her information with the IRS and obtain a Social Security card with her new name. However, when she visited the DMV to acquire a new physical ID, she faced “insane” requirements.
According to her, she visited a local Pittsburgh DMV with all the required documents, such as a birth certificate and marriage license, but was unable to obtain the ID. She was asked to provide proof of residency under her new name, which she did not have, as she had just changed it.
The DMV attendant even told her that she could send herself a letter addressed to her new name and use it as proof of residence, which Casey seemingly found hilariously absurd. In the end, she revealed that was unable to obtain the new ID and would have to return to complete the process.
Viewers React to Pennsylvania Woman’s Journey to the DMV
In the comments on TikTok, Pennsylvania locals appeared to agree with Casey about how hard it was to deal with the local DMV: “Pennsylvania is so terrible for anything related to driver’s licenses. I spent 3 hours at the DMV just to renew my license,” one user said.
Another person commented that it “took me three trips to the DMV to get a real ID.” The issue was echoed by others, who agreed that “PA is awful at this point, I think getting a passport is easier than Real ID.” Someone said, “Girl, just go to a different DMV. I went to change my name and get a real ID. I was in and out within 15 minutes.”
These comments showcase why Casey’s story resonated with so many people, as bureaucratic processes can sometimes be very tiring. Time will tell whether she will resolve these issues soon or end up posting new videos about additional obstacles.
