A Texas DoorDash driver says they never received a $9.50 tip for a $5, seven-mile delivery, raising concerns over how tips are handled on the platform. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. while the driver was trying to reach Platinum status. After the customer’s tip failed to appear in the driver’s account, the driver shared their experience online, sparking widespread discussion about tipping practices in app-based delivery.

Today, I found out that DoorDash steals tips!

The story was posted on the r/doordash subreddit, where it quickly gained traction, earning over 6,000 upvotes and more than 700 comments. Reddit users flocked to the post to share experiences, advice, and opinions, making it one of the most talked-about posts on the forum in recent weeks.

Images shared by the Texas DoorDash driver show that the customer claimed to have left a $9.50 tip and provided proof of payment. However, the money reportedly ended up under “staff tip” instead of reaching the driver. The driver visited the restaurant and confirmed with a friend who works there that no tip had been recorded. The receipt also did not indicate any tip for the driver.

Despite the confusion, the customer and her husband eventually sent $15 via Zelle in addition to the original $5 order, resolving the issue within 30 minutes. This episode left the Texas DoorDash driver questioning the transparency of DoorDash’s tip system and whether other drivers might face similar problems.

Many Reddit users expressed shock and frustration at the situation. “I’ve been dashing since 2023 and I agree with this, DoorDash does scummy stuff,” one Redditor wrote. Some cited DoorDash’s past legal issues with tipping, including a $16.75 million settlement in New York after the company used customer tips to subsidize driver base pay between 2017 and 2019, affecting more than 60,000 Dashers. Other users suggested the issue may have been a mistake by the customer, pointing to evidence in the images that the tip was marked under “staff tip” rather than “driver tip.”

The incident experienced by the Texas DoorDash driver is gaining attention because it highlights ongoing concerns about transparency in app-based delivery platforms, showing how even small tips can cause confusion and frustration for drivers who rely on them for income. The post also resonates with many workers who have experienced similar issues with tipping or payment discrepancies.

Although the driver was ultimately compensated, the case underscores the need for clear tip reporting and consistent payment policies to protect gig workers and ensure fairness.
