A Maryland customer confronted a pizzeria after noticing that the ticket listed him under a different name. Knowing Spanish, Jamal understood what the vulgar word meant. This leads to a heated exchange between him and the manager.
The alleged incident occurred at Bacco Pizzeria in Maryland. Jamal claims he heard employees laughing when he picked up his order. When he got to his car, he noticed a strange name on his ticket. The word is Spanish for “a woman that likes to have sexual intercourse.” The video of the confrontation has been viewed over 200,000 times, with thousands of likes and comments.
After viewing the name on the ticket, the Maryland customer goes back inside. He first confronts the employees, asking them, “Why would you put this on my ticket?” During this, they claim not to know what he’s talking about, to which he reminds them that they were laughing. When they continue to insist they don’t know, he tells them, “It’s discriminatory.” Jamal continues, “I come here, and then ya’ll put something vulgar like this on my ticket that makes fun of who I am.”
He then asks for the manager, only for the man he’s speaking with to identify as the manager. The Maryland customer accuses him of being one of the employees who was laughing. The man claims he doesn’t know what the word means in Spanish. This results in a heated exchange between the two, in which Jamal tells the manager that he doesn’t come there to be judged. He says to him, “The right thing to do because you’re caught and I understand Spanish would be to apologize.” No explanation is given as to why this was done. While the manager states, “I do not support his actions,” Jamal does not accept this.
Maryland Customer Encouraged To Sue
Many have applauded Jamal for confronting the alleged situation. One offers sympathy and assures him, “You handled yourself professionally and with dignity.” Another agrees, “Even when they tried to push you to be ignorant, you held your own without cursing or getting aggressive.” A commenter claims they live in the area and says, “[We] will no longer be patrons here.” Several have encouraged him to get a lawyer and file a lawsuit against the Maryland pizzeria. One tells him to “save the receipt and call a lawyer.” Another agrees, “This is textbook discrimination! You most definitely have a case.”
The video has caught the attention of thousands who are angry on his behalf. The discrimination he has faced has people riled up, especially since he filmed the confrontation as it happened. Those who live in the area claim they have seen past discrimination and rude behavior from the pizzeria. It has gotten enough attention that the pizzeria released an apology statement. In it, they state that the employee was fired and measures will be taken to ensure it never happens again.
It is unclear at this time if Jamal will pursue legal action.
