A new Michigan homeowner is drawing attention and concern for a hidden room in their basement partitioned off and containing a mattress. They claim this square-shaped area is “completely walled off” and viewable only via a ladder, though many concerned online users believe otherwise about the space’s accessibility. Even though the home is allegedly 19 years old, thousands of Redditors believe it could already hold some dark secrets.

Reddit user agoss123b uploaded a video of their new home on r/Weird, showing the basement room from the angle atop a ladder between the joists. “There is no way in/out of the room. The joists are too close together, even if you could somehow climb up the wall without a ladder,” they explained.

When asked whether they’re still buying the property despite this bizarre discovery, they responded that they’re probably going to buy regardless. “I will be tearing the wall down and cleaning that out and opening it up for sure if I buy it. I will likely involve the police when I do this,” they remarked. However, many people were concerned over what this space entails.

Many Believe Someone Had Lived Or Was Put in the Room Illegally

“This looks like someone was imprisoned here,” wrote one person. “Either someone was illegally squatting there or someone was illegally forced in there. File a police report either way,” agreed another commenter. “I’d be shocked if I found out a crime wasn’t committed on that mattress,” remarked another.

As to whether this hidden room has any noticeable smells, OP replied, saying that there was “no smell at all.”

One sharp-eyed Redditor was quick to point out that something or someone might still be in the walled-off space, based on the angle the pink board to the right is leaning. There’s a clear space between the wall and the slanted board, indicating something is propping it up.

As to where the rectangular-cut hole in the drywall leads, agoss123b shares a photo of the room, where one can barely make out the outline of where the cut wall had been covered. While it’s blocked now, clearly, “it was open at one point,” as OP puts it.

For those wondering what the video’s mysterious audible dialogue is about regarding “60% chance of dying” from a Dorito, OP explains that it’s just their “realtor yapping to the inspector.” Disturbing walled-off rooms aside, at least that mystery is solved.
