Virginia voters have approved a Democrat-backed redistricting measure, handing the party a significant win ahead of the midterm elections and delivering a direct rebuke to President Trump, who had urged voters to reject it.
The measure, passed Tuesday in a statewide referendum, approves a state constitutional amendment that temporarily bypasses Virginia’s bipartisan redistricting commission to redraw congressional maps mid-decade. According to The Hill, the new map shifts Democrats’ 6-5 advantage in the state’s congressional delegation to a 10-1 edge, a boost that could prove decisive in the battle for Congress this fall. The measure passed 51.5% to 48.5%.
Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson had urged Virginians to vote no. Former President Obama and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries backed the yes campaign, with Jeffries promising his party would put in “whatever it takes” to push the measure through.
Online Reaction Splits Between Satisfaction and Unease
For many, the result felt like a long-overdue counterpunch. “You can’t refuse to fight after your opponent has already punched you in the face multiple times,” one Virginia voter wrote. Another added, “It sucks it has to be this way, but sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.” A third commenter put it plainly: “The key difference is Democrats gave every voter a say.” Others pointed to the broader pattern, noting that “Democrats have tried to ban gerrymandering and every time it has been shot down by Republicans.”
Not everyone was comfortable with the outcome, even among supporters. “On principle I don’t like any of this,” one commenter wrote. Another raised concerns about the precedent, saying, “I honestly don’t understand how parties get to control redistricting.”
The amendment specifies that redistricting returns to the state’s bipartisan commission after the 2030 census, meaning the changes are temporary.
Republicans have passed new maps in Texas, North Carolina, and Missouri, with a potential special session in Florida that could offer further pickup opportunities.
