A woman in Utah revealed one of the reasons she chose to become a true crime content creator. She detailed how her grandmother, a loving woman, according to her, had killed her great-grandmother in very graphic and disturbing circumstances.
The story was shared by Kourtney Laymance, who runs the popular account Crime With Kourt. As mentioned above, she posts content revolving around past and current crime cases. This personal story, however, was shocking to her audience, garnering 124,000 views, 16,200 likes, and more than 200 comments.
The Utah woman said, admittedly in a nonchalant way, that her grandmother, a woman she grew up with and was kind and loving, had killed her own mother, Kourtney’s great-grandmother.
“Imagine being a kid and suddenly learning that the same grandma who always painted with you and always made holidays feel magical was also the center of one of the most stirring cases you have ever heard of,” she added.
Disturbing Case Detailed
Kourtney detailed that the incident took place back in the 90s in Yakima, Washington. Her grandmother, identified as 42-year-old Christine Varness by the Orlando Sentinel, was taking care of her great-grandmother, 61-year-old Lois Huysman, as she had recently had surgery. During a bath, the great-grandmother admitted she knew about the harrowing abuse her grandmother had suffered at the hands of her many stepfathers. She even blamed her for it.
Something in Kourtney’s grandmother’s mind “snapped.” Christine drowned Lois in the bathtub and then came back home. Haunted, saying that she kept hearing her own mother’s voice for days, she came back and dismembered her.
Disturbingly, Kourtney’s grandmother even told her that her graphic actions were particularly focused on Lois’s jaw. In her own words, “She needed to stop talking,” the Utah content creator said.
“That line in the case files has literally haunted me ever since,” Kourtney said.
The content creator’s grandmother eventually stashed Lois’s remains in multiple garbage cans, which were later filled with cement. The cans were later left in a storage unit for two years.
Christine explained her mother’s disappearance by saying that she had met a “wealthy” man and ran away. She even went as far as writing fake letters pretending to be her.
Christine eventually served two years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter, as per the Seattle Times. A few years after her release, Kourtney was born, and the content creator found out about the family secret when she was 12.

The video sparked multiple responses.
