A man in Ohio shared a video in which he confronted a group of people who were mourning Confederate soldiers on Memorial Day.

In an Instagram post, the man shared a video of the confrontation. He claimed that members of the “Sons of Confederate Veterans” were gathered at Camp Chase Cemetery to honor Confederate soldiers buried there. He said this prompted him to go to the site and read a statement in which he described the Confederate battle flag as a symbol of “degeneracy, depravity, and perversion.”

In the video, the man approached the crowd and spoke about the site, noting that around 2,000 men were buried there. He continued reading aloud, saying, “They died as traitors to their country. They died to preserve the institution of slavery.” At that point, a man from the gathering walked over and told him to leave.

That moment was followed by members of the crowd getting up and confronting the man as he continued reading his statement. “Probably a Democrat voter too, aren’t ya?” one person said to him. Another added, “As a Northerner, I’m telling you to shut the [expletive] up.” The man responded by insisting that he had a right to be there and speak. However, several people in the crowd disagreed with him and continued challenging his presence at the gathering.

As the man continued reading his statement, someone in the crowd called for police assistance. Several people also directed insults toward him, including one remarking, “Your mom’s probably a degenerate too.” The video then cuts to police officers arriving at the scene. They accused the man of trespassing and “causing a distraction.” An officer placed a hand on him, prompting the man to ask him to stop. In response, the officer informed him that he was being detained.

The video then cuts to the director of the cemetery speaking with the man. The director stated that he was requesting the man be trespassed for causing a disturbance. An officer also informed the man that if he returned to the cemetery property again, he could be arrested.

In response, the man asked where the property line began. After being told it started at the steps, he stood at that location and continued reading his statement. At that point, someone from the crowd walked up and slapped the phone out of his hand. The video ended with the man telling officers at the scene that he wanted to press charges for assault.

The man added further details in his caption, expanding on his message. “A story is told about remembering our history, but those who wave the Confederate flag want to rewrite history, a history in which the Southern cause was noble and their struggle honorable and in which slavery was a benign institution. That’s a fairytale,” he wrote.

Viewers Praise Ohio Man Over Confronting Racist Crowd

The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers praised the Ohio man for confronting the crowd, while others strongly criticized the gathering honoring Confederate soldiers. “These guys are morons holy [expletive]. Shame on the cemetery keeper too, but given that he ok’d all those [expletive] showing up there, he’s probably as dumb as the rest of them,” one person wrote. Another added, “Legitimately all the problems in this country today are because we let the confederates claim an ‘oopsie daisy’ after their treason and murder in the name of white supremacy.”

Others commented on the confrontation by framing it as a free speech issue. “Free speech when it’s convenient,” one person wrote. Another added, “One minute they’re clutching their pearls about constitutional rights being infringed upon because somebody told a guy screaming the N-word at black kids to shut up. The next minute it’s ‘that guy said that people who turn their backs on their country and then start a war with them are traitors! Get him the [expletive] outta here, I don’t want to hear that [expletive]!’”

The video sparked broader discussion about differing perspectives on how Confederate history is remembered and why such gatherings remain controversial. Additionally, it led to conversation about public accountability and whether individuals should speak out when they believe something is wrong.
