An individual can only be paid to do so much, and one employee in South Dakota did not feel his pay grade was worth climbing into a car filled with garbage. Going by Jdschmidt068 on Reddit, an auto body technician explained on r/carbage that his boss wanted him to go into a vehicle packed with trash and who-knows-what. “I absolutely refuse to get in the vehicle,” he remarked, sharing how bad the interior’s smell was.
“The smell when you open the door actually punches you in the face and knocks you out cold for a few minutes,” Jdschmidt068 wrote. It wouldn’t be hard to believe him by looking at the car’s photos, and hundreds of Redditors agree.
In a comment two days after posting, he added how he’d gotten sick after working on the filth-ridden vehicle: “Woke up at 4:00 this morning with a horrible headache and severe stomach pain. Could be a coincidence, but considering I haven’t been sick in years, I’m betting it’s not.”
Reddit Was Just as Grossed Out as the South Dakota Employee Was
Numerous commenters didn’t blame him for not wanting to climb into the pigsty of a car. “Is your employer a rodent?” a user questioned in disbelief. OP didn’t hesitate to respond in kind, saying, “It’s my ratatouille.” Another chimed in with, “He works for a raccoon.”
Jdschmidt068 wasn’t alone in strongly refusing to enter the vehicle. One commenter remarked on how they’d sternly tell both the client and their boss that they would not get anywhere near that trash-infested interior. Others added how it’s like “unsafe” and a “major biohazard.” Considering OP got sick shortly after doing the job, they might not be wrong.
Though this isn’t Jdschmidt068’s first rodeo in dealing with a car owner who treats the inside of their vehicle like a dumpster. Posting to r/Autobody, he shared a picture of possibly the same car, which looked very similar to the recent one he was told to work on. Inside, things looked just as nasty; “the smell alone would burn into your skin,” as Jdschmidt068 puts it.
At the very least, this South Dakota auto body tech knows his worth and won’t endanger his well-being just to drive a client’s car, even at the demands of his boss. On the flip side, the fact that someone drives around with that much trash in their car is definitely a hazard on the road.
One faulty slip of a soda can, or a half-empty soft drink cup onto the gas pedal, and things could get even messier than the inside of the vehicles.
