Violent discipline does more harm than teach, yet one teacher in New York took the violent route to punish a student, allegedly throwing their laptop after slamming and throwing it. The student in question, who goes by Fit_Necessary_4432 on Reddit, explained why the teacher acted the way he did on r/mac. “I wasn’t supposed to do and then my teacher slammed it,” they wrote, posting a photo of their laptop with a clearly damaged LCD screen.
For further context, Fit_Necessary_4432 explained that they weren’t supposed to use their laptop at the beginning of the period, but didn’t follow the rules. The teacher wasn’t too happy about this disobedience and, without warning, allegedly “slammed [and] then tossed my laptop,” the Fit_Necessary_4432 recalled. The student claimed they reported the incident to staff, who told them to go to small claims court.
Tens of thousands of Redditors were shocked that a teacher would do such a thing, in front of an entire class, no less. “Contact the school to make them pay. They did the damages,” remarked a commenter. “The LCD panel is cracked. That’s an expensive repair. Teacher should pay,” agreed a second.
A third chimed in, saying that even though a student breaks a rule, no teacher has the right to destroy or damage their belongings. “He doesn’t have that authority. It’s a huge abuse of power and he needs to pay for it. You need to tell your parents and encourage them to contact the school. Sometimes adults need to be taught a lesson as well,” the Redditor wrote.
Others echoed the same senitment about how the New York teacher had crossed the line with his emotions. “This is very poor role modeling by your teacher. So you shouldn’t have been using it, but that’s not the way to treat another human or their property,” said an individual.
Fortunately, OP says their class saw the teacher’s outburst on their laptop, so there are plenty of witnesses in case evidence is needed. Even so, the fact that another staff member told the student to just take things to small claims court is rather concerning and could say alot about the school.
