A North Carolina influencer, while being close to her due date, was asked about her newborn baby’s name by one of her followers. Instead of straight-up answering, the mother chose to keep that information, on top of a photo of her child, behind a newsletter subscription, garnering backlash as a result.
The influencer in question is Caitlin Covington. She is a lifestyle content creator who often features her family, and is also known for being the face of the viral “Christian Girl Autumn” meme. While she has given birth to her third child as of the writing of this article, she apparently shared an Instagram story regarding her name, with creators such as mom.uncharted (Sarah), quickly reacted to, garnering 376,000 views, 29,300 likes, and close to 400 comments.
Sarah read the North Carolina mother’s post on Instagram. Catilin was responding to a “Sunday Q&A” question, which read, “When is your due date? Do you have a name picked out?” The woman detailed that her due date was on Thursday, June 11. Then, she addressed her newborn baby’s name.
“And yes, we have a name picked out!!! Newsletter subscribers will find out first. Already decided I will update newsletter subscribers with her name and a picture as soon as she’s born,” Caitlin wrote, according to Sarah’s post. The influencer then linked to her newsletter, hoping new subscribers would sign up for it.
Sarah, who advocates for protecting children on social media, was in disbelief. She called out Catilin for promoting her newsletter to strangers, who weren’t even friends or family members at all.
“It’s wild how these influencers look at their children,” Sarah said. She then wrote on the clip’s description, “Some of these kids are being exploited the minute they exit the womb.”
Reactions
Sarah’s clip and, as a result, Catilin’s story sparked multiple responses online.
The vast majority of users agreed with Sarah’s point. One viewer said, “Selling access to her child. Hmm…” Another one commented, “The concept of having a public newsletter for your family news is bizarre.“
Some, meanwhile, were a bit more “understanding” toward the North Carolina influencer. One wrote, “This economy is difficult. It sucks, but I get it.” Another one asked, “I mean, I don’t agree, it’s not new though. How much do celebrities make for the same thing?” In both instances, other users disagreed, saying that what Catlin was doing was not okay, with some even calling her behavior dystopian-like.
For the time being, Caitlin has yet to post about her child’s birth. It is unclear if she has, in fact, shared the baby’s name and photos with her newsletter subscribers. She, however, has recently posted an Instagram story in which she announced that the birth story is now available for newsletter subscribers.
