A newly released body camera video has reignited outrage over the arrest of an Oklahoma farmer who was handcuffed after exceeding the public comment time limit during a city council meeting about a controversial data center project. The police officer who arrested the man has since gone viral, with many condemning the officer’s actions.
The footage, shared publicly for the first time by Claremore, Oklahoma resident Darren Blanchard, captures the tense moments leading up to his February arrest at a meeting where residents voiced concerns about Project Mustang, a proposed 300-acre data center development. Blanchard can be seen addressing the Claremore City Council during a public comment session on February 17 when he spoke beyond the allotted three-minute limit.
Based on the bodycam recording, he asked officers if he could first submit supporting documents before leaving the podium. Moments later, an officer instructed colleagues to stop him. When the officers confronted him, Blanchard stated, “This is a public meeting,” and even questioned the cops, “on what grounds?” when they tried to stop him, and they eventually decided to arrest him,
Police charged Blanchard with criminal trespass, an offense carrying a $200 fine. Rather than accept the citation, the farmer has vowed to challenge the charge in court, arguing that the arrest was retaliation for protected speech. Blanchard’s legal team has reportedly filed a motion seeking dismissal of the case while also requesting that the city attorney recuse himself, arguing that the attorney witnessed the events in question. The legal arguments have yet to be resolved.

The video has sparked fresh criticism online, with many accusing authorities of punishing a citizen for exercising his right to speak. Of course, people online stated the obvious, with one commenter pointing out, “I’m starting to think that the police are just there for the rich and corporations,” while another comment implied that the public is used to such actions from law enforcement officers.
“Standard Police behaviour. Even the sweetest most well meaning police officer has to sell his soul 3 times a day fulfilling tasks that serve the status quo,” claims a Reddit user. Funny enough, the lawsuit has escalated, and some social media users suggested that this wouldn’t have happened if the police just waited a little bit.
“It’s so dumb. If they just let him finish nobody would’ve heard about this. They did this to themselves,” according to a commenter. It’s not the first time a data center project has incited outrage in a community. Others even resulted in protests and elevated legal battles. Sadly, Project Mustang has already been greenlit, and the $1-billion development is slated to go live in 2028.
