After a long shift at work, the last thing anyone wants to come to is a mess, though that’s exactly what one individual from Oregon experienced. Upon coming home from their 2am night shift, I_cook_a_mean_chili was appalled at the scene in their kitchen: “The mead we were making exploded.” If that wasn’t bad enough, the alcohol had splashed all over the ceiling and upper walls, not to mention the other hard-to-reach nooks and crannies that the explosion might have reached.
“We don’t want ants. But this is how we’re gonna get ants,” I_cook_a_mean_chili wrote in frustration on r/Wellthatsucks. They had a tight airlock on the brewing container, which had flown across the room and landed on the floor. In the scene, one can see specks of mead dotted across the kitchen floor, making the mess quite a nightmare to clean up.
However, while sympathetic, thousands of Redditors believed this unfortunate occurrence was a rite of passage for those willing to brew at home.
“It’s said that one is not a homebrewer until they’ve mopped their ceiling,” chuckled a Redditor, with two thousand people upvoting in agreement. “I’ve wrung out my dress coat (husband’s beer exploded in the coat closet)…so I definitely hear this,” added another in response.
Reddit Believe the Oregon Local’s Mead Accident Was Because of Its Storage Location
As to the cause behind the explosion, one Reddit user surmised that the airlocked mead became too hot from the heat atop the fridge. I_cook_a_mean_chili deduced the same, adding how they initially thought placing the mead in the refrigerator wasn’t the best idea. Now, they really regret not having changed their mind.
While I_cook_a_mean_chili said they were prepared to be mocked for their mistake, they were pleasantly surprised with how encouraging people were, many of whom offered friendly advice. “If you haven’t already, it can still be saved. Just wash and sanitize the airlock and stopper and tape that sucker in place,” recommended a user. “What terrible timing. I’d be exhausted after dealing with that!” exclaimed a user in sympathy.
Too often, people are mocked for their mistakes, especially when they’re posted online. Fortunately, this Oregon local received plenty of support and positivity from Reddit; hopefully, the suggestions will help prevent future mead explosions.
