Recently, Sony has essentially announced the death of physical media for gaming and will no longer be selling games on discs. Hence, a growing number of PlayStation users say they’re canceling their PlayStation Plus subscriptions in protest after Sony confirmed it will end physical game disc production beginning in 2028. Players fear that the gaming industry is moving toward an all-digital future with fewer consumer protections.
The online campaign has gained traction across social media, where PlayStation players have been sharing screenshots of canceled subscriptions and urging others to “vote with their wallets.” One widely circulated post by X user Pyo even included step-by-step instructions on how to disable PS Plus auto-renewal alongside the message, “Speak up today or lose ownership forever!”
The protest comes as many gamers fear that digital-only gaming could leave consumers without true ownership of the titles they purchase. That’s because digital-only media rely on servers for customer access and availability and are essentially at the mercy of the distributor or the digital storefront. Critics also argue that if games exist solely as digital licenses, publishers could potentially remove access in the future through licensing disputes, store closures, or other business decisions.
Those concerns have been amplified by previous examples in the industry. Several titles, including Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2 and the 2013 Deadpool game, were removed from digital storefronts after licensing agreements expired, leaving physical copies as the only legal way to play them. Moreover, Sony has recently demonstrated how fickle digital media “ownership” can be when they deleted more than 550 movies that their customers bought.
One More Reason to Cancel PS Plus?
For many fans, the debate extends beyond game preservation. Players also worry that eliminating physical discs would effectively end the second-hand market, making it harder to buy used games at discounted prices or lend titles to friends and family. With game prices continuing to rise, it’s easy to argue that a digital-only ecosystem could make gaming significantly more expensive.
Adding to the frustration, Sony executives recently acknowledged that additional PlayStation Plus price increases remain a possibility. Company leadership said future pricing decisions would depend on balancing subscriber value with profitability, following an earlier price increase this year. Hence, one commenter has become jaded, saying, “They can turn it around if they’d like. I won’t. They’re already on thin enough ice. Decisions like this just demonstrate how little they care about the consumer.”
Still, not everyone believes the boycott will make a difference. Some users argued that the cancellations represent only a vocal minority, pointing out that digital game sales have steadily overtaken physical purchases over the past decade. “They are making quintilion dollars with gta VI they dont give a [expletive],” one user wrote, expressing skepticism that Sony would respond to online pressure.
Others disagreed, insisting that financial pressure is the only language major corporations understand. It’s worth noting that Sony has actually listened to player protests and feedback when they review-bombed Helldivers 2 on Steam back in 2024 for a region ban and PSN account requirement. With that said, that earlier consumer victory is no indication of the current boycott’s success.
