A protest outside an immigration detention center in Oregon turned tense this week after a video showed federal agents detaining a woman on a public pavement. The footage has spread widely online, with many people debating what happened before the arrest.
The video was filmed outside the ICE facility in South Portland, where protests have been taking place for several months. According to the post that shared the video, the woman who was detained is Indigenous, and the protest was linked to reports of a separate ICE incident on land belonging to the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.
The Bulletin and KTVZ said that ICE agents driving unmarked vehicles stopped on Warm Springs reservation land earlier this week. Tribal police spoke with the agents, who said they had stopped only to use the restroom while traveling through the area. The tribal government later confirmed that no tribal members were detained during that incident.
In the video making rounds on the Internet, several officers wearing tactical gear are seen restraining the woman, who is wearing a headband and has red handprints painted on her face.
They push her against a white vehicle while she appears to speak or protest. The officers then escort her toward a Department of Homeland Security van as someone records the incident outside a building with boarded-up windows. The video ends with the van driving away.
It is still unclear why the woman was detained, as neither ICE nor the Department of Homeland Security has publicly commented on the video.
