3 Million Eggs Pour Into North Carolina Food Banks After Price-Fixing Settlement: ‘Now Do the Meat Packing Industry!’

North Carolina food banks are getting an unusual delivery after a major price-fixing settlement — nearly 3 million eggs. The shipments are now making their way across the state, where the eggs will be distributed to families through local food banks and pantries.

According to a September 8 release from the North Carolina Department of Justice, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte received 270,000 eggs this week as part of the settlement. Attorney General Jeff Jackson said the agreement is intended to help families while also preventing the companies involved from allegedly working together to manipulate egg prices in the future.

The unusual deliveries stem from an antitrust settlement reached earlier this summer involving Jackson, 16 other bipartisan attorneys general, the U.S. Department of Justice, and three major egg producers: Cal-Maine Foods, Hickman’s Family Farms, and Versova. The companies were accused of working together between 2022 and 2025 to manipulate an industry benchmark tied to egg prices, allegedly helping to inflate the prices ultimately paid by consumers. As part of the settlement, the producers agreed to donate around 50 million eggs to food banks nationwide, with nearly 3 million earmarked for North Carolina.

The deliveries come at an important time for North Carolina, where food insecurity has continued to climb. More than 1.7 million people across the state are currently facing hunger, leaving food banks under growing pressure as families struggle to keep food on the table. As we recently reported, rising demand has also come as food banks contend with federal funding cuts and other financial pressures, making large-scale donations like this particularly significant.

North Carolinians React as Millions of Eggs Reach Food Banks

The reaction on Reddit was largely positive, with many commenters praising Jackson while also calling for similar scrutiny of other parts of the food industry. “Fantastic thanks Jeff. Now do the meat packing industry!” one person wrote, prompting another to reply, “Yep, chicken + pork + beef price collusion.” Others kept their praise simple, writing, “This is why we vote, folks!!” and “Lucky to have such a great AG.”

Another North Carolinian was particularly enthusiastic about the settlement, writing, “This is incredible work, Jeff. I was just bragging to a friend about my state’s AG kicking butt, taking names and tossing eggs (to people who need them most).” Someone else even compared Jackson to New York politician Zohran Mamdani, commenting, “This dude is our Mamdani. Only dude I believe in in NC he gets [expletive] done.”

Not everyone was satisfied with the outcome, however. One commenter questioned whether the companies involved had faced serious enough consequences, writing, “So egg producers colluded to increase prices, leading to it becoming a major election issue and potentially impacting said election, and get off with no criminal charges? Sounds like any company involved should be dissolved and its leadership investigated and jailed. But that would require government oversight and consequences.”

For families already struggling to keep food on the table, millions of eggs arriving at food banks could make a real difference. The settlement may not solve North Carolina’s wider food insecurity problem overnight, but it does mean more people will have access to something as simple as a nutritious meal. At a time when many households are feeling the pinch, that is certainly something worth celebrating.
