Outrage erupted online after a North Carolina family refused to stand for the national anthem during a game.

The game the family was attending appeared to have taken place at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. The controversial video was filmed and shared by another person who was among the fans attending the game.

In the video, the cameraperson showed that most of the crowd was standing during the national anthem, which is often viewed as a sign of respect. They then focused on the family of four, showing that they had chosen to remain seated during the anthem. The family appeared to be among the only people sitting while those around them stood.

The cameraperson expressed disapproval of the family’s decision in the caption, writing, “don’t like America. Then leave [American flag].” Because the family was black, the cameraperson also added a racially charged statement over the video: “It’s not all of them but it’s always them.”

Remaining seated or kneeling during the national anthem has historically been used by some black Americans and others as a form of protest against racial injustice, discrimination, and inequality. The practice has become particularly associated with athletes and activists who have used the anthem to draw attention to concerns about the treatment of black Americans.

However, the broader history of kneeling or remaining seated during the national anthem does not establish why this particular family chose to remain seated. Unless the family has publicly explained their reasons, there is no clear evidence that their actions were intended as a protest against racial injustice. Assuming that was their motivation based solely on their decision not to stand would therefore be speculative.

Viewers Outraged After North Carolina Family Refuses to Stand Up for National Anthem

Viewers online were outraged after seeing the North Carolina family remain seated during the national anthem, with many criticizing their decision. “Shameful and disrespectful,” one person wrote. Another person said, “As a Vietnam veteran’s daughter this is truly disheartening. My dad almost died and has suffered life long physical ailments and cancer from being oversees and this is how Americans treat those that sever our country. Shameful!”

More people expressed outrage over the family’s decision, with one person writing, “That fires me up. Everyone should stand for the national anthem. Many people have died just so they can sit at the ball game.” Others, however, defended the family and argued that they had the right to remain seated. “Mind yalls business, its not against the law,” someone said. Another person wrote, “yep, enjoying their freedom and their right.”

The situation raised concerns about the different views surrounding the national anthem. While some people believe refusing to stand is disrespectful, others argue that everyone should be free to decide whether they want to participate.
