A hijab-wearing Muslim mother recorded a confrontation with a woman at Carnegie Diner in Vienna, Virginia, who told her to leave the country and blamed her for the September 11 attacks.
Sumer Mobarak recorded the confrontation and shared it on TikTok via Politicallypali and on Instagram via @sumermob. The exchange began inside the restaurant before continuing into the parking lot.
The confrontation continued as the woman and her husband left the restaurant and headed toward their car. When Mobarak challenged her remarks, the woman initially denied saying anything. The exchange escalated, with her eventually saying, “You have no right to be in this country” and calling the other woman an “American traitor.”
The most inflammatory moment came when the woman blamed the Muslim mother for the September 11 attacks, saying, “9/11 occurred because of you.” Mobarak pushed back, referencing the attacks of October 7 and 9/11, while the confrontation continued in the parking lot. The woman also told her to remove her head covering, saying, “Get that [stuff] off your face. Your head.”
Mobarak repeatedly pointed out that she was born in the United States and rejected the demand that she leave the country. The other woman maintained that she was a proud American and added, “I served in the Air Force.”
That prompted another heated exchange, with Mobarak criticizing U.S. military actions overseas. The confrontation eventually ended after the couple got into their car and drove away, while Mobarak continued to criticize what she described as racist behavior.
Internet Reacts to Virginia Diner Confrontation
The video drew strong reactions online, with many viewers criticizing the woman for telling Mobarak to leave the country despite Mobarak repeatedly explaining that she was born in the United States. One commenter focused on that part of the exchange, writing, “She didn’t expect to get the fire she received when demanding that an American citizen to go ‘home.’”
Others focused on the woman’s attempt to connect Mobarak personally to the September 11 attacks. One viewer responded, “Wait till she finds out it wasn’t the Muslims,” while another wondered, “I wonder if she knows what America actually does to other countries.”
Not everyone watching the confrontation sided completely with Mobarak, however. One commenter questioned her response after the woman said she had served in the Air Force, pointing to Mobarak’s remark about the U.S. invading “countries like mine” after she had emphasized that she was born in America.
Still, much of the criticism centered on the demand that an American-born Muslim woman “go home.” The exchange also highlighted the distinction between individual Muslim Americans and the terrorists responsible for 9/11. The FBI identifies the 19 hijackers as members of al-Qaeda who carried out the attacks as part of a coordinated terrorist plot.
The incident comes amid elevated levels of reported anti-Muslim bias nationwide. CAIR’s 2026 Civil Rights Report said the organization received 8,683 complaints in 2025, the highest single-year total it has recorded and a slight increase from 8,658 complaints in 2024.
For Mobarak, however, the confrontation was more personal than the national statistics. Her video captured an American-born Muslim mother repeatedly defending her right to belong in the country where she was born while another woman insisted that she should leave.
