A Texas woman went above and beyond to identify the person who stole her doormat shortly after she moved into her new apartment. When she tracked the rug down, she discovered the alleged culprit was much closer to home than she realized.
Posted by TikTok user Mollyworld96, Molly shared how “upset” she was that her doormat went missing. It was a Halloween themed doormat depicting horror icons Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, and Jason Voorhees.
She then shows off the dedication she puts into finding it via ‘Have you seen me?’ fliers, which she posts around her apartment building. Molly sticks one outside her apartment, in the hallways, in the stairwells, at the building entrance, and even outside an elevator.
Molly then went to the apartment building staff, seeking footage. “My apartment complex pulled up the cameras. It was my neighbor,” Molly says, looking dumbfounded. “Literally my neighbor. I’m looking at his back porch right now.” He simply walked up to her door, rolled it up, and left with the doormat.
In her TikTok video, Molly also includes the call her apartment building staff made to her neighbor. A staff member lets the “rug thief” know Molly is looking to “press charges” if he doesn’t return the doormat. Molly does a reveal at the end, confirming he did in fact bring the doormat back.
Viewers online drag the ‘rug thief’ and call for his eviction
Like Molly, viewers on her TikTok video left comments calling for the tenant to face some kind of consequence.
“Is that not grounds for eviction?” asked TikTok user Devin. “Stealing from your fellow neighbors.” Molly responded to the post, saying only that she was “feeling some type of way.”
Failing to evict him, TikTok user Sheila wrote that the tenant should “get a violation from the office at the very least.”
To prevent further thefts, TikTok user Brooke recommended Molly get a “Ring doorbell,” which received over a thousand Likes on TikTok. Molly responded, stating she’d be ordering one “as soon as that paycheck hits fr.”
And really, that’s probably the best move to make. After all, if the tenant is willing to steal something as innocuous as a doormat, they might steal something else of value, like a package.
