‘Republicans Don’t Do That, However I’ve Seen PLENTY of Democrats That Do’: Illinois Dairy Queen Worker Calls Police on Customer Over Discount Deal

He really wanted that “deal”

There’s no doubt that plenty of corporate ads can be pretty misleading if you’re not careful. Unfortunately, one customer at an Illinois Dairy Queen fell for such a marketing tactic, which led him to believe he could get two Blizzards for $1.99. According to Reddit user Capnlatenight, who was working the counter, the man arrived with a paper coupon that said: “Buy one, get one for $1.99.” The customer was so convinced that he could get two for that discounted price that police got involved.

No matter how hard I tried to explain it, he thought he was getting 2 blizzards for $1.99.

“No matter how hard I tried to explain it, he thought he was getting 2 blizzards for $1.99,” Capnlatenight sighed, clearly not wanting to deal with the confused customer. OP ended up calling the cops on the man, but not because he wanted two Blizzards at a dollar each. According to OP, he got a little handsy and aggressive.

“I tried kicking him out as he was getting aggressive and preventing me from doing my other duties,” Capnlatenight recalled. After the man allegedly refused, OP warned him one more time before calling the police. “He started taking stuff from behind the counter as I was on the phone. Not entering the area, just reaching,” Capnlatenight added, explaining how concerningly assertive the man had become.

While that’s no way to act in a fast-food restaurant over a $1.99 confusion of Blizzards, plenty of Redditors in the comments empathized with the customer. “To be fair, I’ve always hated the wording of these ads. They invite confusion from the general public,” remarked a commenter, adding that Dairy Queen isn’t the place where someone’s “reading comprehension crisis” is going to be fixed.

“The wording is intentionally misleading so people will order two and the corporation hopes that it’s too awkward for the customer to take it off the order,” wrote another. On the flip side, several others were confident the wording is obvious and that the customer failed to read the coupon’s fine print. Then, in a bizarre turn of events, the comments got political.

Some Redditors Got Political Over the Dairy Queen Coupon Dispute

“I’m sure he’s voting Republican,” remarked a user. “I’d put my life savings on that bet,” a second wrote in agreement. A third chimed in, opposing the idea and attacking the opposite party: “Republicans don’t do that, however I’ve seen PLENTY of Democrats that do.” One person tried to compromise, writing, “Y’all know that there are stupid people in both parties right?”

In the end, Capnlatenight never mentioned the customer’s political leaning, nor did they clarify whether the man was arrested. Unfortunately for the man, he likely didn’t get his supposed double Blizzard deal for $1.99, though that would have been an absolute steal in this economy.
