While not a Dasher herself, a Pennsylvania woman says she has experienced what many DoorDash drivers may face regularly: possible discrimination from restaurant workers. In the r/doordash subreddit, user Reymelny says she was buying a Dunkin’ Donuts treat for her team at a hair salon as it was early morning. She said she initially tried to call the Dunkin’ Donuts nearby, but after no response, she decided to do a pickup order via DoorDash. Little did she know how the fast-food manager would treat her.
After driving over to the Dunkin’ herself, Reymelny says the manager told her, “Oh no, we don’t have that. The customer canceled that order,” when she arrived to pick up her order. She was confused; she is the customer, and she certainly did not cancel anything. After letting out a hearty laugh, Reymelny showed the manager her phone to confirm she was the customer, but his reaction made her blood boil.
“[The] dude rolled his eyes so far back into his head and muttered, ‘Thought you were just a dasher,’” she recalled. “It infuriated me to know how much dashers must struggle with these issues,” she remarked empathetically. “He straight up lied to me! And I’m sure he’s gotten away with that before!” Redditors in the comments confirmed her suspicions about how this manager and likely many others felt about DoorDash drivers.
“Restaurants hate dashers. Unfortunately there are a lot of [expletive] dashers so it’s hard to blame them, but then it just becomes a cycle of [expletive],” read the top comment. Another user claiming to be a Dasher said, “The poorly paid places have resentment for us. They treat dashers like trash, and they mostly treat door dash orders like trash. As if the door dash customer is not their customer.”
Redditors Accuse the Dunkin’ Manager of Poorly Handling the Situation
Countless others went back and forth, arguing whether the Dunkin’ manager’s behavior and deceitful greeting to Reymelny were justifiable when there are so many ‘unsavory’ drivers. One person who claims to have worked on both sides accusing the manager of being 100% in the wrong. “The dasher could’ve been deactivated for unassigning and then another dasher was able to retrieve it,” they explained. “That and their customer who ordered the Doordash from them gets screwed too.”
Of course, not every restaurant or fast-food stop is anti-Dasher, but this Dunkin’s manager seemed to be. As OP recalled, the manager didn’t even bother checking anything when he told her the order had been canceled. When she proved she was the customer, “they begrudgingly pulled the order together.”
Fortunately for Reymelny, she got her order in the end just fine, though now she understands a little better how DoorDashers might be treated when they’re bringing her her next order.
