A man in Maine was allegedly caught driving around and removing political signs opposing Republican Susan Collins.

Reddit user u/eab1006 shared details of the incident online, claiming it took place in Falmouth, Maine. According to the user, the man was driving around and removing political signs opposing Susan Collins. “Reported to non-emergency. This is illegal,” they wrote.

Along with the post, the Redditor included a picture of the car allegedly driven by the man. It had a sticker that read, “Susan Collins Our Senator,” which appeared to support the claims about the driver’s political affiliation.

The user also described what the man allegedly did, writing, “Removed ‘FUNDS ICE’ signs in front of Collins signs. Like REMOVED as in put into his car.” They provided a description of the man, saying, “He was a fully bald white man, maybe 55-65yrs, in an all tan suit.”

Finally, the Redditor added an update saying they had been contacted by a Falmouth Police Department officer. “Update: the Falmouth PD officer contacted me saying they were in the area searching. They have his info and will continue to be on the lookout in the area. If anyone sees him/his car/ anyone doing this please report it!” they wrote.

Removing political signs without the owner’s permission can be illegal in Maine, particularly when they are placed on private property. Political signs are generally considered personal property, so taking them without permission could constitute theft under state law. Depending on the circumstances, removing or damaging the signs could also lead to criminal charges.

However, the legality may depend on where the signs were placed, who owned them, and whether the person had permission or legal authority to remove them. If the allegations in the Reddit post are accurate, the man’s actions could therefore constitute a violation of Maine law.

Viewers Criticize Maine Man For Allegedly Removing Political Signs

Many viewers online criticized the Maine man over the allegations that he was removing political signs opposing Susan Collins. “What an idiot. Leave it to the Republicans to scream about fraud and then do [expletive] like this,” one person wrote. Another commented, “Every accusation has been an admission.”

Others doubted that the man would face any consequences for his alleged actions. “I’m sure Falmouth PD won’t do anything. Given it’s probably an old person. And crime becomes acceptable once you’re past a certain age. A stern talking to and this reddit post will be about as much trouble as they’ll get in. Sad reality of our justice system. NOW…. A blue hair trans person or a Somali taking out Susan Collins signs and we could be sure justice would be swift and they find the perpetrators quickly,” one person wrote. The post’s author responded, “The officer I spoke to seemed to take it seriously, at least to me, so let’s hope. But public shame is the next best thing.”

The allegations highlighted concerns about the removal of political signs to benefit one candidate over another. They also raised questions about the importance of holding people accountable when they are caught interfering with political signs.
